I will be looking forward to it. Hopefully, my economic situation, quite poor right now, will have improved by then.

In an odd coincidence, one of the authors has the same name as one of the main characters in my novel "Dragon's Ark" (due out this fall from Ambler House).

Kate – we already had more good stuff than we could include, so couldn't justify squeezing out other people's stories to make way for our own. Gary, Ally and I could all have contributed, but we agreed not to.

Craig, 'my bad' is a California-speak expression that can't wholly be condemned, since it has such distinguished adherents as Buffy Summers and Michael Stipe.

I think it's great that Joel and Ally restrained themselves from putting their own stories in the book. That sounds like a swipe, but I don't mean it like that -- what I mean is that there's something slightly distasteful about editors including their own material.

Plenty of writers I admire have edited anthologies and have included their own work -- Brian Aldiss in the recent Penguin SF anthology, for instance -- a superb anthology, superbly edited, and a superb story by the superb Aldiss -- and yet I still found it slightly distasteful. I do emphaise the slightly.

Ten out of ten therefore to Ally and Joel for showing admirable restraint; and if I ever end up editing an anthology of my own one day, let me keep their example uppermost in my mind and NOT include one of my own pieces.

Interesting, Rhys, but I've never agreed. If I pick up an anthology edited by someone I like I'm disappointed if they don't have a story of their own in it. It feels like a peculiar omission to me.

Of course I applaud Ally's and Joel's (and Gary F's) reasons for not including stories of their own but I'm sorry they're not in it.

Fair enough, Kate. As the saying goes: different strokes, different kinds of vessel on sundry liquid mediums...

One thing I do disapprove of, though, is when editors feel they have to use a pseudonym when including their own pieces -- as if it's a stealth submission. The great Mike Moorcock (an author of genius) sometimes did this, alas, accepting pieces by "James Colvin" (and vice versa) when he knew all along it was himself. Tut tut, I say!

Awww... My assumption would be that they wanted to include a story but felt funny about being editor AND contributor.

But I can be naive.

True, but some of the "Colvin" stories were co-written with James Cawthorne weren't they? Either way I had always assumed Moorcock was trying to fill up New Worlds and didn't always have enough stories!

The 'vice versa' is intriguing. Did selling stories to James Colvin lead Michael Moorcock to suspect that JC was himself, because of the similar handwriting? Or was it James Colvin who blew MM's cover? Or was there a traumatic confrontation in what appeared to be a doorway but was in fact a mirror?

The first eight or so Fontana "Great Ghost Stories" anthos would have been measurably poorer for not including stories by their editor, Robert Aickman.

The first eight or so Fontana "Great Ghost Stories" anthos would have been measurably poorer for not including stories by their editor, Robert Aickman.

Indeed, and yet apparently someone wrote in one year and complained and so the next year's volume had no Aickman story. Fortunately rather more people wrote in and complained about that so his tales were reinstated the year after, up to when Fontana kicked him off the series (I think, although if anyone knows better feel free to correct me) in favour of the more popular R Chetwynd-Hayes who was ordered to up the number of contemporary authors and perhaps tellingly never selected an Aickman story for the rest of the series

If an anthology is on a theme (like fascism) then I say it's perfectly fine, and welcome, for the editor to include his or her own work.

But "best of the year"s I'm not so sure. Didn't Lin Carter, for example, include his own stories in the DAW's "Year's Best Fantasy Stories" he edited? Something a bit arrogant about that, imho. But I'm also not sure if I should feel it is, or not....

Yes, I think it's problematic for an editor to include his/her work when the book is flagged as 'Best' or 'Great' or the like. No matter how good that work might be. Though of course, any reasonably talented writer will produce stories that match his/her own criteria of quality, making them irresistible to the author as editor. Just say no is the answer, I think.

Of course, co-edited anthologies allow for a valid selection process in which no editor is selecting his/her own work. But we decided simply to keep the space clear for other contributors. We were turning down too much good work for any other approach to be viable.

Heya John, just got off the phone from Mary Danby and as she was chief editor at Fontana (she had just finished 7th Fontana Great Horror Book) when Aickman left. She has this to say:

There was no drama involving Aickman's departure and it certainly had nothing to do with RCH and he wasn't fired. He just didn't want to do the books any more, they were something that weren't that important to him.

Hope this helps
Johnny

> Did selling stories to James Colvin lead Michael Moorcock to suspect that JC was himself, because of the similar handwriting? Or was it James Colvin who blew MM's cover?

All I can say, Joel, is that if I was editing an anthology under an assumed name -- let's say my pseudonym is Pigwinder Bratbat and the anthology is a collection of bakery-themed stories entitled WHERE THE TART IS -- and I received a submission from myself using my real name, then I would surely frown as I started reading it. The style, content and dynamic of the submission would gradually lead me to suspect that I was the author. I would find this dodgy.

Imagine that I accepted the piece anyway. Years later I am editing another anthology under my real name (this new anthology is a collection of bartering-themed stories entitled WHERE THE MART IS) and I received a submission from Pigwinder Bratbat. If I chose to accept it for my anthology I wouldn't say this was a case of innocent editorial business. No, I'd be more inclined to say it was a case of auto-mutual backscratching (self-symbiosis, if you prefer...)

You all know the saying: "I'll scratch my back; and I'll scratch mine."

Yes, I do understand that joining a clique and networking is often a helpful strategy for an aspiring writer, but to join a clique with yourself? To network with yourself??

That turns individualism into a group activity!

Joel, GCW, Gags, Ally, et al - thanks so much for your kind words! I'm feeling much, much better now, thanks, and may even (I only say MAY) consider leaving off the cigs on a permanent basis, after my forced cold-turkey this last month or so. It's just a shame that the financial side of things was affected by my enforced inactivity... but on the other hand, I did finish one new story, and have two more almost done!

...Actually, scrub that bit about the cigs.

Yeah, I still fancy a smoke now & again, but the advantages outweigh the need.

After the spilling of blood, sweat and tears, (less hyperbole Ally....okay....a little stress) the Never Again anthology is coming off the press very soon. Preorders are soooooo helpful to getting the printing costs sorted and then we can be giving money to Amnesty International, PEN and the Sophie Lancaster Fund. It will be launched at Fantasycon on the Saturday at 2p.m. in the main bar.
The stories are powerful, extraordinary and incredibly moving.

I'll be selling NEVER AGAIN for a couple of hours Friday afternoon and Saturday morning as Gary has a lot of work on and can't make it until the Saturday.

I'll also have contributor copies for those who want them ahead of the launch.

The launch is at 2p.m. Saturday.

The Internet is a fake form of communication, completely divorced from real life, which is why I always take anything that's said on it with a pinch of salt, avoid getting offended, and strive not to give offence... because I really don't know the person or the affect my words might have on them. It's called self control.

In real life I can be an utter shit lol.

You're right, Steve - the internet is a place of tomfoolery. Which is why I always try to meet folk I know online in person, preferably in a situation involving alcohol.

It's my experience that people are much better in real life. But hasn't that always been the case?

That's why internet arguments are moronic. Funny. But moronic.

As I've mentioned before on here, I have a stepson who is now grown up. However, when he was about 11, he went through a stage of what I've come to call playful sadism, which generally involved him antagonising myself and his mother in order to gain attention. This almost always happened in public, at parties at our house and things like that. But he was clever here - he never did anything overtly confrontational. I'll give you an example. Once, when we had family round for a buffet evening, we laid out all the food on the dining table. The lad was told not to touch any until the guests arrived. But sure enough, he was quite soon standing in the kitchen doorway, grinning knowingly, the sleeves of his shirt pulled down to his fingertips. We didn't need to ask him what he was hiding inside his shirt.

The point is that it was extremely difficult to respond to this in an appropriate manner, because folk outside our complex familial situation wouldn't have appreciated the context. We'd had months and months of this steady, accumulating, attention-seeking, sublimated, damned-up aggressive behaviour, you see. An explosive reaction would just have looked unwarranted to any onlooking folk. But that is how this made us feel. That is what it often drove us to. It's a very frustrating situation to be in, but we were reassured to realise that the boy would eventually grow out of it and start expressing his unhappiness and neediness in other, more productive ways.

Was Arthur's Day yesterday (why couldn't it have been today... groan) and my local was giving away free Guinness and BBQ grub, I had nine, before I lost the ability to count - that's how we do things over here lol. Pass the alka seltzer, someone.

Gary, my wee nephew is going through a phase like that at the minute, questioning every single thing my sister or bro-in-law tell him to do, then questioning the answer, and the one after that, etc, and so on, as if he is willing them to lose their tempers, which they frequently do in the end... he thinks it's hilarious! An intelligent wee bugger, frighteningly so for an 8 year old, he is able to counter their logic every single time, with a superior grin on his face. Amazing and often highly entertaining to watch but not to live with. With any other adult, including his teachers, he is as good as gold, go figure.

That's the stuff. And I think Zed has hit on a good way to market this with mention of metal music forums.

Actually, Ally, I think I know somebody who might help, just give me a minute or two.

You can never have enough Army, of course- so, in the interests of cultural enrichment, here's this:

And a bit of Justin Sullivan live in Germany with a storming Bob Dylan cover:

Go on. You know you want to.

But it's still the day, Gary! Sunset isn't until 7:07 PM! This means you still have eight and a half hours left to love it in!

Weren't New Model Army banned from touring in the USA because they were "smelly"? Or was it because they "don't know scales"? I'm sure it was one or the other!

Rhys - yes, NMA were refused a work VISA on account that they weren't classified as professional artists.

That was the official reason given. But in light of the musical criminals they allow in every week, and of those they export overseas, I somehow think that perhaps it was a load of bullshit.

I got an email from John cc'd to someone asking for it to be promoted on a site .........I think on the site below (well it was the site on the email so I think it will be that one).

http://thequietus.com/

He has given me more contacts...when I couldn't find two on google he emailed their addresses within a few minutes...top bloke!

I've contacted a few people in the comic industry too.

I'll work through the contact list in the back of the NE book when I get a chance. Amnesty International are considering it for shops.

Sophie Lancaster's mother, Sylvia, wrote back to me yesterday, absolutely over the moon that people care about what happened to her daughter....the book goes to Sylvia soon.

Joel has a contact list, too...so it is all coming together nicely.

I'll keep updating with news as and when we get it :>). There was something else to mention but I had a phone call...and have promptly forgotten...it will come to me soon.

THE QUIETUS have put NEVER AGAIN up as BOOK OF THE DAY. A little about them....

'Record of the Day gave us the Music Publication Of The Year (Student Award) in 2008 and Music Website of the Year award in 2009. Da Capo's respected Best Music Writing guide also picked out three of our features for praise in its 2009 edition, Add to this praise from publications and broadcasters including the Guardian, The Sun, Fader, Observer, Independent, BBC, New York Times and Chicago Time Out. ....confident we're doing something right.'

There is an excellent review of NEVER AGAIN in BLACK STATIC 19.

'Reviewing charity anthologies is an endeavour fraught with peril for the reviewer as nobody wants to be the bad guy who rains on everyone's parade, but fortunately the twenty three stories in this volume - eleven of them reprints- are of a generally high standard, exceptional in one or two cases, so that particular poison chalice gets taken from me....'

Pete Tennant's review of the anthology can be found in BLACK STATIC 19. Available from TTA PRESS.

Thanks for the comments, Des.

And please be assured that the book's gestalt, or cumulative effect, or overall thematic configuration, was considered and discussed at some length. A balance of more direct and more oblique stories, of darker and more optimistic stories, of supernatural horror and speculative fiction, was always intended. Much thought was also given to the sequence, which makes your real-time review particularly interesting. I have to confess I rarely read the contents of an anthology in the order of presentation, though I reshuffle my impressions when forming an overall view – translating from digital to analogue, so to speak.

Joel,
Thanks for your comments. I can teell that you and Allyson has such designs.
But I was broaching the possibility of a different gestalt - for me - than the one you intended.

The magic of synchronicity or serendipity or retrocausality?

Thanks Des. As ever, your comments are incisive, personal, imaginative and able to make connections. I disagree with a few of your judgements, but that's fine. Unlike some critics you're not claiming the authority of 'objective' or 'pure' analysis... and we're not claiming the authority of 'objective' or 'pure' fiction. If you do read the Introduction I hope you'll take it as another narrative, a personal view – even where the reading of a particular story might appear to be prescribed, I as a reader would always take that as a challenge: is it really that way? And as we point out, there isn't a monolithic 'anti-racist' or 'anti-fascist' viewpoint – not in the book, and not in the world.

Thanks, Joel. I agree with the thrust of what you say there. And I have now decided that I will read the introduction. It would be discourteous and illogically defiant not to do so. Meanwhile, I have decided not to *review* the intro in the same way as I have not reviewed similar intros and story-notes in all my real-time reviews so far: my real-time reviews being simply about fiction and what it means to the reader (in this case, me) in its pure form. NEVER AGAIN presented the greatest challenge so far to this approach. Thanks for that challenge. And, as you know, I support your aims for this book wholeheartedly. It is a great book full of great stories.

Frank, Warsaw was a definite highlight of the trip. Particularly a night walk along the main street (forget the name) where all the main churches etc are - with George, an 84 year old Pole, as our guide (he has been doing this for years) - and his stories were fascinating and harrowing and everything else you can think of.
He referred to 'manifestations' - one of which was going on as we walked - a group of people praying (with a microphone) and with crosses ... relating to recent aftermath of the plane crash in Russia where many Polish dignitaries died (the site of which I was later quite close to). I was a bit confused exactly what the prayers were about. But it was memorable and atmospheric.

Yes, Des, this particular manifestation was recently much larger in size. The protest was against the planned removal of a cross erected outside the parliament building. Most Poles wanted it removed, but some, a group of very vociferous far-right religious zealots wanted it to stay. Even the usual right-wingers distanced themselves from it. The church has completely washed its hands of it. Most Poles feel embarrassed by the whole thing.

The street you were walking down was probably Nowy Swiat.

I work at the Warsaw Stock Exchange on Friday mornings and so I walk along this street as shops are opening up. I love that street as I like watching people hurrying to and from work.

Did you manage to get to the museum for the 1944 Warsaw uprising?

I wasn't long enough in Warsaw to go to that museum. But I did have much longer in Moscow and St Petersburg (and Novgorod to some extent), as it was essentially a Russian trip, the other cities being in transit with only one tour each.

Well, the FT represents informed rationality within the capitalist elite. Hence its 'Marx was right' headline when the banking system collapsed in 2008. It's not as ignorant as the Times or the Telegraph, let alone the Mail or the Express. It would never make excuses for aggressive political short cuts like racism. The FT is the broadsheet of choice among non-Caucasian capitalists in the UK, because it sees capitalism in international and rational terms instead of wrapping it up in xenophobia and authoritarian populism. It's a useful guide to what the more intelligent members of the ruling class are thinking, and I'm not that surprised to find it endorsing Never Again.

Yes, I agree. I've read the FT quite often. But I'd say *all* the ruling class (by race or intelligence) read it, as they all check their investments there, with countless tables and data concerning Unit Trusts etc etc. It is certainly a coup to get a review in there.

I love the line "a lack of household names" which helps to put into perspective the fact that even though so many of us regard ourselves as big (or at least moderate) cheeses, we're actually nothing at all outside the obscure dusty corner of one neglected spare room in a crumbling house on the outskirts of a depopulated city in the remotest region of Fictionland. Metaphorically speaking...

There's so much strutting and preening (I'm one of the worst offenders; so are you, in fact you're often worse; yes, YOU) that it's good to be reminded that we all need to learn some humility sometimes... I, indeed, am not a household name. Neither are you. We're not even huthold, tenthold or kennelhold names!

Do you think household names render Census data inaccurate? I mean, you're supposed to reply to the forms on behalf of a household, but if you're a household yourself, that doubles up all quantification in responses. Thus, all Census data is rubbish. I haved spoken.

What happens to a household name when the house is condemned? Capital punishment was abolished in the UK in 1965, but houses have been condemned since then. How is the paradox resolved?

That's what I want to knowed. Yes, knowed. Knowed.

Rhys - 558th short story! If it's not too personal, mate (see what I did, mate, now employed as an emotional strong-arm tactic to allow me to ask), are a full-time writer/author, or do you have a separate source of income (such as a sideline in Ginger's Snuff, org. since 1879!)..

Well, whether he is referring to me or not, Rhys made some pretty heavy accusations before.

A very complex issue with many undercurrents - and surely to dredge up that whole bitter argument again between us in the Weird and Horror field (where the case is not proved in any of the various directions) is not conducive to the good of the book.
Never again, I say.

Fair enough, mate. More power to you. Whatever pays the bills. What I earn is relatively okay by Polish standards, it pays the bills, we have a good life, we have almost finished paying for the apartment (the mortage), and we are able to keep buying books, which makes as happy as clams in a shell. But the changeover to the pound would render it a pitance. But whatever works at making us happy is fine by me.

How long have you been writing now, Rhy? Twenty odd years???

No cheating was allowed, by looking at the name of the photo, by the way! I forgot to specify that...

Frank: I keep my bills to a bare minimum. I have the lowest maintenance lifestyle possible. That's how I exist on a pittance. My girlfriend is the same as me. A few years ago I turned against "possessions" with a vengeance: it just seemed so much clutter. Like you, though, I seem to have given books a special "protected" status. I'm still overrun with them, even though I always give away each one the moment I finish reading it, and I don't buy new ones.* One day I'll get down to zero... maybe!

* With a very very few exceptions.

I've been this way since I was about 17. I have all the essentials, of course: TV, vid, DVD player, kitchen and cleaning appliances. But that's it. Books and vids and DVDs, however - tons of em.

So there is to be no official RCMB reaction to someone -- i.e. not for writing a blog elsewhere with his opinion -- but for linking to it on this thread above so as ostensibly to open old wounds about NEVER AGAIN and its initial process??

A paragraph in that blog - unless it's been changed since - is inflammatory in any scheme of things.

My blog post is reasonable, self-searching, even self-critical in parts, and factual. And nobody is being forced to read it against their will. The so-called "inflammatory" paragraph is actually rather mild. I could have been a hell of a lot more scathing about certain people who have put ego before morality.

Nobody has to agree with my opinions on anything, but I sure as hell won't stop expressing what I believe to be right, true and in the service of justice. Never in my life have I given in to bullies and I don't intend starting now. That's my position. It's a simple one.

I don't give into bullies either. That paragraph - embedded with a picture of Mussolini - was tantamount as if posted on this RCMB thread by linking to it. I can only assume you wanted people here to read it, Rhys.

Don't want this to get out of hand. I have long term affection for you. But that paragraph is designedly inflammatory in my eyes, republicising a very difficult debate about the inception of this excellent book.

This is a grey area. Regardless of whether it's inflammatory - an issue on which I wish to remain agnostic - does a link on a message board equate to a post on a message board?

Let me ask anyone else who posts here to help me on this. I'm a bit stuck, to be honest.

Well, that's fair enough, Gary. Having questioned the paragraph, its setting, its motivation, its substance, its method of dissemination, and its unilateral, out-of-the-blue (after a few months of peace on this question) re-arousal of sensitivities, I shall withdraw.

I would never compare you with Mussolini, Des. Mussolini went skiing with a bare chest. I've seen photographic evidence.

Nor was my post "out of the blue". I've been meaning to blog about Never Again for months but was hampered by my lack of a personal copy to photograph (I only use my own photographs of the books I promote). In the end I had to ask Ally to take a unique photo for me.

I could have bought my own copy of the anthology, I guess. But I'm too tight to do that. In fact I'm so tight that I even refuse to turn the heating on and prefer to sit in a cold room with three jumpers, a hat and gloves.

I wasn't complaining, Gary!

There's no reason why contributors to anthologies should receive preferential treatment in receiving free copies.

I'm currently waiting for copies of various anthologies that I'm in, so I can promote them on my blog, in accordance with my totally random "unique photo only" rule.

I did promise to buy one of your own books, Gary, if I remember correctly, and also a copy of Martin Amis' Money, so I'll probably order those in December. They will be the last books I buy until April 2014.

We hope that all Never Again contributors have now been sent a copy of the book – if any haven't, we urge them to get in touch.

Often in the small press, a free copy is the only payment received by contributors to a magazine or anthology, and it can be financially helpful in sparing the author the cost of that publication. For many of us it's the only reason we send out stories: it's cheaper than buying stuff.

More often than not I don't read any anthology I'm in. I don't even read my own contribution, partly because I already know what's going to happen in the story...

But I do always promote the books, and I always give them away to people I know who will read them; and hopefully they will promote them too. So I'm not entirely self-centred. I don't leave them unread on shelves, that's for sure, not like I used to do.

I have exactly 322 books in my possession. Every time I finish reading one I give it away. The idea is to get down to only a handful, but I can't see that happening for years and years. In fact it probably won't happen. Which means that when I eventually move abroad again I'll have to give most of them away unread, or even (I shudder to think about it) destroy them...

Books: beautiful millstones around our cricked necks.

And in Morpheus Tales, a new review...by Adrian Brady!

"Here we have a collection of genre tales dedicated to the fight against prejudice, in its many forms, particularly racism and fascism. This isn’t just a great anthology; it is a group of writers speaking out against “political attitudes that stifle compassion.” It’s about awareness and treating every individual like a human being, sentiments that we can all understand.

The theme is echoed in the stories contained in the book, many dealing with racism in its various forms, and a lot of the others dealing with fascism and totalitarianism.

The writers are a diverse bunch, each giving us a different play on the themes. Some stories are a bit looser than others, but all are excellently written. My favourites of the collection are a Lansdale reprint, and the original stories from Simon Kurt Unsworth, Gary McMahon and Rhys Hughes.

“The Torturer” by Steve Duffy is particularly disturbing, even more so in the factual context this book intends to inform us about. For those readers who are sparked to take action, at the end of the book there is a list of organisations that stand up against fascism and racism. The book has a lot of meaning behind it, and that just helps you to enjoy the fiction even more, and makes you realise that we are lucky to have been born or live in the free world, where we are allowed to write and read what we want. A great collection with a great sentiment, this book deserves your support and understanding."

By Adrian Brady
