I know I'm a bit late in seeing this, but...oh, my, what a great film. Utterly compelling, and with an astonishing performance (as usual) from Daniel Day Lewis. The soundtrack is also quite brilliant. I didn't want this one to end. Loved it. |

I felt there could have been more to the film (don't know what though) but there's no denying the power of DDL's performance. Whatever goes on around him in a film, he always seems a 100% genuine character. |

TWBB is an intense and rather terrifying character study - I think some folk have been disappointed in the lack of conventional Hollywood "plot" because of all the hype surrounding it. Personally, I don't understand these complaints; the film is majestic. |

It takes audiences a while to realise this isn't a conventional historical drama/thriller: it's a study of madness and an allegory about capitalism (based on a classic socialist novel from the 1920s). The famous "I drink your milkshake" line resonates with what we read in the papers every day about the bonuses, pensions etc of the super-rich. They drink our fucking milkshake. Brilliant film. |

Indeed, Joel. Indeed. And, yes: brilliant, but in a way modern films rarely are. The final scene was simply extraordinary. I love this director. Boogie Nights, Magnolia, There Will be Blood: all great films. |

And Paul Dano who played The Preacher was magnificent in this as well. |

Er, Magnolia was the title of the film I mentioned on the 'enfant terrible' thread. Didn't like it much. There Willl Be Blood is very much better. Magnolia gets full marks for shocking the audience though. You end up feeling like a witness and/or a voyeur. You just don't feel you've learned anything. Mind you, both films are about how sick the rich are. Which you won't learn from Hello! magazine. |

Joel, I didn't even recognise Magnolia from your description... and IMHO it's about so much more than what you describe on the other thread. The scene with all the characters singing that same Ami Mann song is worth the price of admission alone. And the climactic rain of frogs. |

Re-reading your comments on the other thread, I think it's a different film, Joel. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnolia_(film) |

I wanted to prove to a friend that people from the old USSR were pedantic. That's why I did the search for "Russian anal" Honest |

As a friend of mine commented a decade ago, if you do an Internet search for 'sex with goats on fire' it will ask you to specify the type of goat. |

Ha! Just to test, Joel, I typed in google the phrase, but misspelled it, so it came out "Sex with goats on ire". And google asked me: "Did you mean 'Sex with goats on fire'? ", italics theirs. Why didn't it assume I meant, "Six wet goats in Ireland"?... clearly a more logical need-based search.... |

Oh, yeah, and uh - THERE WILL BE BLOOD is a great flick too. Though Ciaran Hinds is totally wasted here, probably the worst wasted throwaway role to a great actor since, oh... I dunno... pick any Harry Potter movie.... |

Craig - Have you seen Rome? I ask because Ciaran Hinds plays Julius Caesar and he's a knock-out. |

I saw, long ago, the pilot, but none since: it's one of those series I'm meaning to revisit and get the full experience, just haven't had the time. Are they still doing this series...? Where he stood out for me the most, was his role in the movie MUNICH, the best film from that year, hands-down - Spielberg is allowed many lessers (MINORITY REPORT, anyone?), if he can keep creating a few like this.... |

Craig - your comments about Munich and Speilberg are spot-on. I felt this was the movie I'd always thought he had it in him to make. Taken a bleedin' long time though. Rome finished after two series. It wrapped up quite nicely. One of my fave series ever. Great actors, absorbing narrative and fantastic production which unfortunately led to it only going two series. Too expensive. |

Ciaran Hinds is a very good actor indeed, isn't he? I too loved Munich...but I also liked Minority Report a lot. |

Minority Report was full steam ahead until the obvious ending. I didn't like the jet pack scene or the car production plant scene, mainly on the grounds that Speilberg had inserted them to lighten the mood, as if he were afraid of tackling such dark subject matter. |

Horses for courses: I loved it, and own the DVD. Nor do I think it's dumb. It's actually a very clever piece of popular entertainment. Speilberg had inserted them to lighten the mood, as if he were afraid of tackling such dark subject matter How do you know? Did he tell you? IMHO, the film is a dark action film, so needed these action scenes. |

I enjoyed Minority Report - there are many interesting elements to the film, even if you cast aside the entertainment. But I think a different director may have made a good film into a great film. |

Zed - He's been inserting relief filled action pieces for decade and when interviewed by a Danish journalist about it he admitted that he might have made the action scenes in Minority Report a little less about a rollercoaster ride and more edge of the seat stuff with the possibility of danger. If that makes sense. Question: What is Speilberg's favourite action/thriller? |

Well Die Hard is a classic. And with the crop of recent terrible action movies, Die Hard just grows and grows-- Did not like the recent Die hard too much though. The only action remake that worked completly was John Rambo |
