I was looking through the literally hundreds of old cassette tapes I still own, mostly from my days of music trading, when I came upon this old Radio 4 programme which I recorded on October 31st 1998!

The Archive Hour: "Return of the Man in Black"
Ramsey Campbell recalls the history of horror on the radio. Aprox. 60 minutes

Side 2 of this Maxell UR 60 is labelled The Beast With 5 Fingers which I assume was part of the original broadcast.
Now I no longer have a cassette recorder at my instant disposal to check this out again, and I certainly don't have any facilities to duplicate this on to CD format, but I'll happily send the tape to anyone here so long as they can do me (and whoever else wants one) a cd copy.

Ooo, sounds good, Patrick. I've got an old cassette tape player - but I've no idea how to duplicate it to CD. Sorry. But I'd be interested in hearing it if anyone can help out here.

Hi Patrick, I've done this with a few tapes, but am not sure I'd entrust any more to the old Walkman I've used to do it.

Essentially, anyone who has a tape player, a computer and a minijack-to-minijack lead can do it. You need to download a programme like Audacity (free) first.

Then: Open Auduacity > Plug the lead into the headphones socket of the tape player and into the microphone socket of the computer > Play a bit and see if you can hear it through the computer > If you can, rewind, hit play, and then hit record in Audacity > When the recording stops, hit Stop on Audacity and export as an .mp3.

Hope that helps...

It would be even better to convert it to mp3 and then upload it to a free filesharing websitelike RapidShare or Yousendit so we can all grab it and enjoy it!

What are the copyright issues regarding this?

It's no more legal than taping it off the radio and making lots of copies for your friends would have been in 1998.

However, it would not have to be uploaded to a public file-sharing site, it could simply be there for the members of this message board, for example. Also, as there is unlikely to be a commercial exploitation of the programme, and if it were just to be available to a small number of people, I wouldn't imagine anyone would make a fuss about it.

Actually, as Ramsey is one of the contributors to the programme (the main contributor?) it would be him who would be losing out most (in a manner of speaking), as he would not be getting the repeat fees he's entitled to if the programme is rebroadcast. However, if there is a surge of interest because of the recording that convinces the BBC to repeat the programme, then... It's all very complicated.

Also, the BBC has had reason to be very grateful to people who made home recordings of their programmes in the past, when they have mislaid (taped over or binned) their original copies...

So does anybody want me to send them the tape then? I'm more than happy to do so if they're able to convert it in to a downloadable file.
