Hi all, This is a heads-up to a marvelous film I saw yesterday at a festival in Brussels: Summer Wars An excellent, subtle, complex japanese animation feature that shows once again how much the japanese are ahead of western animators with their rich and complex storytelling. It alternates between problems in a Facebook-like virtual reality system, and family life on the countryside. Really, it's amazing. The director previously made the great animated movie "The girl who leap through time" and this one is even better. Now that Miyazaki is getting older, I think that this director is ready to take over the torch. There are trailers on youtube, but I think they don't capture the wonderful atmosphere and richness. I can't imagine anyone here not loving it. | ||

I look forward to it, Giancarlo! I did like the director's previous film. I also very much admire the films of Satoshi Kon - I raved about his Paprika a while back in my Video Watchdog column. | ||

Yes, and since you like Paprika, you'll find some similar atmosphere in Summer Wars. And Summer Wars is even better than Paprika, really ! Curious what Satoshi Kon will do next, his movies are indeed very good, I also liked Tokyo Godfathers, Millenium Actress and Perfect Blue. Ramsey, here is another great tip: the 8 part manga series Pluto by Naoki Urasawa, inspired by the classic Astroboy stories by Tezuka, and brought bang up to date for a mature audience. Really outstanding. All 8 volumes are now available. (I must lack the culture to understand your reference to one Giancarlo...) | ||
