... I've finally signed up to Facebook. There isn't much on my profile or page or wall or whatever it's called at the moment, but I'm likely to try and see if any of you want to be my "friend" shortly. Just trying to figure out how to use the site and what the point of it all is! I think one of the reasons I held out for so long was that I didn't know which of my personas to use it for - horror fan, autograph collector, tutor or chronic illness "survivor". You can only have one f/b profile, can't you? So I've put all of them in my info bit and I guess I'm likely to have friends from all of my various incarnations. Anyway, off to play with it now ... PS: If any of you have any words of advice or warning about using it, please let me know! |

Don't worry about personas, they're all part of you anyway. Just be yourself. Glad you're finally there though! |

Well done Caroline! It took me ages as well! And now you'll know when I post my film reviews! |

Now we just need to get Joel to sign up... (the words 'cold day in hell' spring to mind...) |

Hmmm. Just sharing my thoughts about Facebook over here rather than over there. It's a bit "Big Brother is watching you" isn't it? I mean, I can see all the games you've all been playing for example. So you can all see what I'm doing too? Eeeek! |

Just disable all the apps and none of us will know what you get up to. You can sort everything out in the privacy settings and choose how much people see. I'd also disable email notifications while you're at it because it gets to be a real nuisance. Best advice of all: Subscribe to George Takei's feed. A guaranteed smile a day! |

"I mean, I can see all the games you've all been playing for example." You can work that out here... |

Joel - Kate - err, how the heck to do I disable apps? I think I've figured the privacy settings, but I definitely need to find out how to disable email notifications as I've got a full enough inbox every time I switch on as it is. Not that I have anything to hide about what I get up to online, of course - just in case any of you were wondering ... OK, off to find George Takei now ... |

My favourite thing on fb at the moment is the various 'still a better love story than twilight' memes that pop up occasionally. Basically they're stills from various films with the above quote plastered across them. Best so far have been the pic of john hurt with a face-hugger attached and the still from the squeal piggy squeal scene from deliverance. |

I'm finding facebook a little odd. It's like reading everyone's stream of random thoughts! You can't really have a proper discussion, can you, like you have on a discussion board? Also, it's making me feel a little inadequate. I don't have anything interesting to say about myself! It's OK for those of you who are writers - talking about your latest book, etc - but the most exciting thing I've done today is the weekly shop! |

One of my friends practically begged me to go round to his house to go through his stamp collection to tell him what was worth the most. He told me I was the best person he could think of to help. I told him philately would get him nowhere... |

Weber, your punnery is beginning to reach worrying levels... have you been hanging out with Joel? Caroline, don't worry! I often feel that I don't have anything much of interest to say on FB either (and there are some things I don't really want to share with people). One weird thing I've noticed is that about 20-30% of my 'friends' are people I don't really even know (even in the online sense of 'knowing'). When I first signed up I got a lot of friend requests from 'friends of friends', people I'd heard of vaguely in some cases but didn't know, and felt bad about declining their invitations... It's nice sometimes just to share interests and see what people have been up to. You're right, though - it's easier to have a more in-depth, thoughtful discussion here on the RCMB. |

You need to be careful exactly what information you share on facebook. I once lost my job as a chef when it was revealed through fb that my brother had been sent to prison. It was desperately unfair and they never listened no matter how many times i told them you can't judge a book by his brother. |

Ducking autocorrect. You can't judge a cook by his brother. |

They tend to be more accurately typed over there. If you make a typo there you can correct it. |
