The new Jonathan Carroll book dropped through my letterbox yesterday - The Ghost in Love.

Forget the fact that I'm in the middle of The Armageddon Rag by George RR Martin. That can wait. New JC to read.

I'm off now to read it.

I read it over the weekend - but I'm still undecided about whether or not I really liked it (I am a huge Carroll fan). I kinda didn't at first, then it took hold of me, then I wasn't so sure, then I got sucked in again and read another thirty pages ... and that's the way it went all the way through to the end.

Zed - spoiling for a fight? Eh? Why's that? I thought it was obvious. You have what I want. And no, I don't mean a miserable arse of a face.

You've lost me again? Seriously. I have no clue what you mean by any of this...

I have what you ant? What's that, the ability to lose track of an author a few books ago.

Oh, hang on: Weber's is the original post. The one stating he's read JC's new book.

I'm a bit tired now.

Honestly, I'm not being moody - simply confused by this exchange:

I used to love JC, but sort of lost track of hima few books ago. Not even sure why. :-/

Zed - you lucky bastard.

I don't understand why that makes me lucky. :-/

You big weirdo. :-)

Oh Lordy. I only meant that's great that you have Carrol's new book, meaning I wish I had his new book.

I'll get you Santex and a pillow. There, there...mummy make it better.

But I don't have Carrol's new book. I haven't read his last 3 or 4. Which is what I said above.

Fran - you're half mad and half biscuit. :-)

Zed, I have read the last few Carroll books, which I why I agree with Frank when he calls you "a lucky bastard" considering you haven't.

Carroll dropped the ball at least two, maybe three, books ago, and I keep waiting for him to pick it back up but he hasn't.

BTW, have I ever mentioned Carroll doesn't like Horror? He posted something to his website about it a few years ago. I can dig it up, if anyone's curious. It's a short quote ; not a polemic on the subject or anything.

Simon, I wouldn't mind seeing the Carroll quote about Horror. I remember him saying years ago that he was thinking of writing a Horror novel but then his publisher told him it would need to be about 600 pages and Carroll said he'd stick to his usual books then thanks all the same.

I'll look for it later today, Stu, but the quote was basically saying that Horror is bad because it is about darkness, and good fiction is about light.

Or something to that effect.

Simon, is this the quote?

"I don't read horror or fantasy," he says. "That's not a criticism, it's simply not my taste. My imagination is vivid enough and there's enough real time horror in life to fill my dance card. Reading it does not enhance my life and in many ways, I think that's what books are about. Enhancement, expansion. When people say I write horror or fantasy, my first question is define the genres and then tell me why my stuff fits into your definition. Because the dead are in the stories? Because bad things happen outside the ordinary? There are certain points I want to make, certain things I want to say in what I write. If that means employing ghosts or aborted children or whatever tools or devices, then it's okay (and not necessarily genre) if in the end they accomplish your purpose.

"As far as horror is concerned, I don't set out to scare a reader. I think that is one of the tenets of horror writing. You want the person scared who's reading your story. I don't. I want them moved. I want them to doubt and question and think about things they're not used to thinking about. But scare them? No, that's not part of the agenda. If it happens, it's only a spinoff of something else. And fantasy too much of the time is simply authors showing off their vivid and colorful imagination. Weird and sometimes wonderful worlds, but not often well presented or filled out."

No.

But I imagine it's an expanded version of the quote.

I say fair enough to Carroll. But I don't agree that horror just sets out to scare. Horror is as equally capable of moving as any other genre or non-genre.

Agreed, Fran. Bad horror sets out just to scare - the good stuff, the stuff we all enjoy, seeks to do more.

For example, 'Cujo'. The ending of that book moved me to tears. The ending to 'Secret Stories' when the dad comes into the meeting looking for somebody to blame for his boy's death. Heart wrenching stuff.

I read Cujo in one sitting on a car journey from North Wales to Newcastle when I was 15. I got to THAT LINE near the end and burst into a flood of tears. My Mum had my Dad stop the car and pull over to check what was wrong with me.
