Lovecraft's largely first person narrative prose was far from execrable! How very dare they!
He created a uniquely atmospheric narrative form and a world, a dreamworld and a mythology that was, and still is, startlingly original and compelling as well as truly frightening and touched by genius.
If these pompous oafs who would deny him the Dickensian stature he deserves want to read something truly execrable they should try August Derleth's 'The Trail Of Cthulhu', which I've relegated to my "some time I've nothing better to do" pile as it is so excruciatingly badly written.
Even Dennis Wheatley's horror tales are better written and vastly more imaginative and original for all the author's laughably antiquated views.
