Well I saw this yesterday and while I liked it very much it was pretty much ruined by an audience that chose to laugh almost throughout. I mean I could see how it was appropriate in a few scenes but not as much as in this case. That said, I experienced a fair bit of dread and fear watching this, though it gets a little formulaic towards the end. I think I need to see it again.

Never saw it Tony but will soon, been meaning to.

... That's my pebble thrown into this ghostly-still pond.

First time I’ve checked on here in ages and good to see you’re still around guys!

‘Hereditary’ is one damn scary and incredibly well made horror film that reeks of Ramsey Campbell, imho. I’d say it’s the best serious adult horror movie I’ve seen in decades. Its strength is in the low key approach and subtle accumulation of unsettling details. Up there with any of the great satanic horrors of the 70s. I also found it quite Lynchian in its more surreal moments - done with great subtlety until all hell breaks loose in the genuinely terrifying final third.

Wow - I forgot I came here back then! I really have been so distracted, it's not that I was avoiding this place.

In the interim, I saw HEREDITARY. Sorry - hated it. I saw this film before, done much better in fact - it was called ROSEMARY'S BABY, and THE TENANT, and THE PERFUME OF THE LADY IN BLACK, and SUSPIRIA, and, and, and....

I will give it its visual style, and a good performance from Collette. It bodes well for future work by this director.

But recent horror films I've seen put this one away. THE INVITATION (2016) - phenomenal! IT FOLLOWS (2016) - silly premise, but a truly unique style that unsettled even a jaded seen-it-all like me. FRANKENSTEIN'S ARMY (2013) - one of the best POV horror films of recent memory. Even THE RITUAL (2018) had some fantastic moments, and good overall storyline. I'm sure I'm forgetting some....

I liked THE INVITATION and loved IT FOLLOWS. Also UNDER THE SKIN was too powerful for me to ever watch again, I think.

Yes, I watched Hereditary again and disliked it more this time. It was like watching a really talented kid who had yet to experience some big life events. You could see the skills, the blossoming ability....he just had nothing yet to really say.
I haven't even heard of The Invitation!
I did love It Follows though. It had a sense of artistry and something going on beyond the screen. You don't get that much at the cinema now. The only moment I didn't like was the dropping of the tvs into the pool. It was like the filmmakers lost their nerve and felt they had to nuts-and-bolts the story for fearing they might lose people. But it was ok, I understand that fear.

That's exactly what I felt about IT FOLLOWS myself, Tony, well put. The ending felt like a capitulation to the production company/studio - but the rest of it had a quiet intensity which created high levels of tension. And the characters were well realized, too. Again, despite the absurdly silly and unexplained premise, but that doesn't matter when the rest goes well.

Oh, do immediately see THE INVITATION! It's still on Netflix, at least here it is in the States. Don't read a synopsis - just go into it... I'm pretty sure you will take to it nicely, Tony....

Will do!
What I loved about It Follows was that it bucked the learned trend that plots need to be clear and well structured. It Follows meandered and was largely plotless, but we were still gripped, like the tone was doing it all by itself. Hereditary tried to do that but chickened out - besides the fact it didn't truly seem to have a single decent mechanism inside the hood.

Yes, indeed, Tony, the creators took time to sort of dwell in the world they created. There's some real authenticity to the characters in this film, which also went a long way towards excusing the premise. And also, the way the horror unfolded... it's so natural, so patient, so real... it's not jumping out and scaring you every second... it all combined to make it stand out in the memory. I believe another's being made, or has been made... can only hope it's as good....

It reminds me of a little-known horror film by the guys who made the surprisingly fine You're Next! and V/H/S, a film called A Horrible Way To Die (2010). The naturalism about these films, all three actually... it's how horror would probably enter our worlds as it is, not with a big drum and horns, but quietly, unnoticeably. That's one of the strengths of Hereditary, where it got it right - depiction of normal, every day life, invaded by horror....

I loved You're Next! It had genuine wit to it. Felt almost theatrical in a funny way, or Woody Allenish. I also really liked the VHS movies, some genuine dread in there.
It's a key ingredient to horror, isn't it? And music. I think horror need music more than a lot of other films; and not this percussive underlining of the action, this moody synth noodling but full melodic themes. Listen to Colin Town's theme to Full Circle - it saves the film. But yes, horror directors now neglect the texture of life, the fun, the warmth, the normalcy...but what does horror add if we savour those things? Why don't we just like drama or comedy? It always makes me wonder, that.
