Tips!
This struck me like a lightning bolt recently.
If you feel the need to have a character behave in a stereotypical way because the story kind of needs it, forget it; if a character is cocky, sexist or whatever, tone him down, make him sympathetic. I know this is obvious but it never dawned on me before. It is EASIER to write more 'real' characters than two dimensional ones.
