Since we're on the subject of zomies...well, sort of.

I'm delighted to announce that the fabulous Abaddon Books (http://www.abaddonbooks.com/main.php) have commissioned me to write a zombie novel for their exciting TOMES OF THE DEAD series of paperback originals. This will be my first mass market release, so I'm obviously thrilled to be writing it.

Hungry Hearts is a stand-alone story set in the north of England during a zombie apocalypse. I don't want to give too much away regarding the plot, but rather than examine the large-scale effects of the dead rising to feast upon the living, my novel will focus right in on three very damaged characters and their, well, truly weird love triangle...

Expect madness, mayhem and the usual McMahon bleakness. Oh, and zombies. Thousands of 'em.

What's good about the Abbadon books, is that they can be found, with only minor diffculty, in Waterstones -- and for under a tenner.

Not as bad as Ian Watson's suggestion that we start a new line of homosexual erotica fiction called Gay Abaddon.

Hoist very much by my own petard.

Yes, the books are all pretty readily available. Very good to have the big two bookshops on side. That's mainly down to our distributors who are great.

Books are starting to make more noise in the US too.

Well done, Zed. If the Abaddon list is pulp, we should remember that the likes of Lovecraft, Howard, Hammett, Chandler, Bradbury and Leiber were all pulp writers. When pulp fiction is written with grace and discipline and passion and energy, there's nothing to touch it.

My favourite thing about the Abaddon books: they are pocket paperback format. I loathe these big, clumsy B-format paperbacks the small press uses. The pocket paperback is a thing of wonder, a thing of beauty.

:-)

Joel - God, yes, literate pulp fiction can't be beaten.

Those are the ones, Tony - where the hell are you meant to read them? Certainly not on the bus/train. They're far too cumbersome.

The campaign for the return of the pocket paperback original starts here!

They've got to be greener for a start. And they just fit the hands - do publishers have big hands now or something?

No, but it can be slowed down considerably by giving it a baseball bat and scattering a few dozen Chavs in front of it.
