Sad, shocking news that the great genre writer passed away on New Year's Eve. Author of over a hundred novels, my favorite of which were the Richard Stark series. No more Parker novels! I'll be toasting one to him tonight. What a great career!

I'm starting my "essay postings" again. Think I know what my first topic will be.

Bugger. Just when it looked like we'd get through '08 without losing any more major talent. A very sad loss.

RIP.

I didn't realise he'd written the original screenplay for THE STEPFATHER - probably my favourite from the slew of peculiar familial/fried psycho flicks from the 1990s.

I remember seeing The Stepfather in 1987 while I was at university. It was one of a handful of superior horror films to come out around that time (Blue Velvet, The Hitcher, Hellraiser and Angel Heart being a few of the others). As Gary said, it's one of the best of its type, and Terry O'Quinn is excellent (in a very early role) as the title character.

I agree with all Huw says above.

I was well into cinema at the time and all the mentioned films were first class.

A good little run of films around 1987/88....an oasis in the shitfarm of the 80's.

I saw The Stepfather one wintry morning in 1987 when I should have been at lectures. Not seen it since but that terrific shot near the beginning where the camera pulls back as he's leaving the house has stayed with me. I seem to remember Jill Schoelen was quite watchable too.

Hi Lord P!

I can't watch Locke in Lost without thinking of the Stepfather...

I'll up you Zed, and even admit I liked STEPFATHER 2, with that actress-chick with the searingly-blue eyes... I remember it being campy and crazy and unintentionally funny... or maybe, intentionally?...

Looks like there's a new Parker movie adaptation out next year, with Jason Statham in the lead.
