Mine arrived yesterday and looks great, the cover is wonderful (pics on screen don't do it justice - but there's no credit for the cover artist?)

Nice to see a lot of 'blast-from-the-past' names in the publication history and acknowledgements.

Also, Simon, thank you so much for the kind comment in your story notes. Really cheered me up, that did.

I did yours to make the catalogue look wonderful. You know, the way women used to paint moles on their faces to enhance their beauty by contrast.

Pictures Of The Dark turned up today - looks great, apart from the line "TypeSETtiNg bY gR0y fRa" which doesn't bode well for the readability of the book.

I really don't like the cover, btw. I hope you don't mind me saying that. It's too fussy, complicated and gauche (to my taste) and the text on the back is garish and almost illegible.

But what do I know? I know nothing about making covers. Someone does it for me on 'Nemonymous.'

As I say, I'm sure this book is a great book. I have a good instinct about it. I can't wait to start getting stuck in.

I really like the cover - particularly the finished article on the actual book. It suits Simon's work perfectly: the pulp elements resting alongside social realism.

I may change my view about the cover, then, once I've read the book. I shall report my views - if they change - during my coming review. I thought I should make my starting-point clear on this board. Not that my views are all that important on covers. And perhaps on little else. :-)

I've now started my real-time review:

This process may take quite a while. So (assuming you are interested), I'd only look at the site on a daily basis for updates. I'm unlikely to do more than one story a day, maybe less.

He's mine. I met Simon in 1998. He came to my surprise 50th birthday party that year and helped publish my novella 'Agra Aska' in Scorpion Press. It's wonderful to see what looks as if it will be a truly great book (once I've finished reading it) in his name. Great and well-deserved.

I've just spent a wonderful weekend at Simon's gaff, where he force-fed me Chinese food and some weird Polish honey liquer, made me watch a hilarious low-budget Salford-made horror DVD, subjected me to insane audio plays, and then we worked 'till 2 AM on the novel we're writing together.

I'm bloody exhausted.

And well done, Gray Friars Press. I even began to like the cover in the end. :-)

I still would like to know what E.M. Forster is doing in 'The Slashed Menagerie'.

Des- thanks once again! A brilliant review. Both in terms of being a very complimentary review and of being perceptive, intelligent... of *connecting* with what you're reading in a way too many reviewers fail to.

As for E.M. Forster's presence... I'm ashamed to admit I'd read little or none of his fiction at the time of writing 'Menagerie' (1998.) I was trying to think of a writer who depicted the lives of upper-class types and he was the first (possibly only!) one I could think of. Laziness on my part, basically.

Actually, EM Forster made more sense when I thought of his story 'The Machine Stops' as a result of another of your stories, Simon.

You probably hit on the right author instinctively. And it was EM Forster (Howard's End) where I first came across the phrase: 'only connect'. Which connects with your 'connection' comment.

Could you tell I didn't like the last story but, in the context, thought it was perfect for what was needed at the end? A story that became a zombie itself - in a book brimming with 'real' zombies! No need to answer that question, as it is a rhetorical one.

A great book. Thanks for the rollercoaster of beaing able to review it real-time big-style. :-)

Actually, the quote I end the review with from the last story should become a universal proverb or maxim:

"The unthinkable never becomes thinkable; it just happens, and you're left to deal with what's left."
