I saw this clip on telly last night and think it is one of the creepiest little things I've ever seen in a movie. Is the movie any good? Maybe Winner missed his calling...

You never seen it, Tony? I saw it on its release, and found a very few parts effective - he mainly used deformed actors to suggest the horrors of hell during the climax, which is a little tasteless, to be sure. However, I do have it on DVD...

This is easily the best scene in the movie, alas. The scene is terrific; the movie only so-so.

The odd thing is, this clip has had its soundtrack replaced - it now seems as if it's a clip from a 'seventies Italian horror film!

Should I see it then? I feel like I want to. Apparently the books are quite good.

Weirdly, earlier today I heard that I'm being sent a copy of this to review for Videovista.

This film - and the scene with the old man in particular - fuelled my childhood nightmares for years. That scene is easily the best in the film, but it's an interesting entry into the 1970s Satanic sub genre.

Blimey - I've been buying DVDs for ten years! Got my first player for £450 back in '98, just under a year after DVDs first came out in the US.

The Sentinel was one of the big horror movies of that period focusing on demonic forces, along with others like The Omen. I haven't seen it in quite some time - the main thing I recall from it is a malevolent Burgess Meredith.

I got mine the year this came out, for £120 or so. This disc, along with Billy Elliot, were the first two movies I bought.

It freaks the fuck out of me that the film's website is still up and running, eight years down the line.

I bought mine back in 2000. Paid 500 quid for a modified Region-free machine, and it's still going strong.

Yep - my first one was an American one that wasn't region free the way they are now; I had to set it to the relevant region before I inserted a disc. And being from the US it was 110 volts so I had a clumsy Maplins transformer on the mains lead to whack up the voltage! It still works but can't play the Region Enhanced discs, so I replaced it four years back and it's now been relegated to the garage.

Well, I finally watched it - and loved it. Proper horror doesn't have to be scary at all, just unnerve and hint at strange big things, and this film does that better than most.
