Sorry about the plug, but I'm very, very proud of this one.

It's been a long road, but my double novella collection is finally available to buy direct from the publisher:
http://www.screamingdreams.com/differentskins.html

From the mighty Tim lebbon's introduction:

"Some horror feels … light. Barren of meaning, just a few slashes of paint on the walls of a big, empty room. The horror of Gary McMahon fills the room completely, and then opens the door and invites you to enter."

I saw it at FCon and thought it was striking and gorgeous, Zed. I'd have bought it too, if Lord P didn't already have it. I enjoyed your Dirty Prayers immensely and am really looking forward to this one!

Btw, I still haven't scoured your "Pull me finger!" imagery from my brain!

:-)

Thanks, Kate. Do let me know what you think of the book - the second novella is the bleakest thing I've ever written. The only time I've ever disturbed myself with my own work. :-/

In fact Lady P likes bleak rather more than I do

Gary - your book is currently sitting on a table next to my wingback armchair awaiting my perusal when I'm in a particularly good mood to buffer what I know will be an emotionally battering experience. At least I hope it will be.

In The Skin is horrendously scary. The best piece of out-and-out horror I've read in years. Makes me wonder how such a fey butterfly of a man like McMahon wrote it.

Thanks, GF. I cherish the fact you think so much of that particular tale.

Bleak? From Mr McMahon? I find that hard to believe... Surely there is at least a sunny day in this one? Maybe a buy-one-get-one-free offer in a supermarket a character frequents...?

Looks expressively lovely, though, Zed. If 'lovely' is allowed in association with it!

So I ordered from the website yesterday and was able to use PayPal.

Des, I'm sure the word is 'scatalogy'. Even if that risks confusion with a pathological aversion to random non-word vocal improvisation in jazz music.

Which, in fact, is a problem of mine: I can't cope with 'nonsense' or non-language vocal sounds (unless they are just vowel sounds) in music because they make me invent non-existent words which I think I have heard, and then can't forget about. It's troubled me for many years.

Zed, I have DIFFERENT SKINS and look forward to reading it.

Especially of mainstream (corporate) publishing, where all decisions are made by accountants or by marketing people who trained as accountants. Checking proofs is not cost-effective, end of story. Editors are little people and authors might as well be five miles underground, toiling in the mines.

The small press, on the other hand, are just lazy.

Copy-editors, though... they're the worst of the lot. There would have been a whole extra Circle of Hell, beneath Judas Iscariot buried up to his neck in ice, reserved exclusively for copy-editors, if they'd existed back in Dante's time. Or possibly there was, but the f*cking copy-editors cut it out...

But yet, typos do appear in all walks of publishing. It shows that we're all human essentially.
Obviously you aim to get rid of them 100% but the odd one always slips through.

From a comment on this Washington Post page:

"America's fistula full of bought Congressmen and Senators on the lobbyist feedbag continues to ooze its rancid puss through these two."

Is 'pus' spelt as 'puss' in USA?

Thanks Karim! And Steve is a gentleman - he's in this for the long haul and although he has problems with health and finance from time to time he intends to make sure that many writers get out there.

Just read 'Different Skins' yesterday- or rather, I started it rather late and then ended up staying up way too late. The first novella was filled with many startling images and rich in atmosphere and dread. It also had some really original ideas. The second novella, 'In the Skin,' to quote Lord P's comment on another thread about something entirely different, was 'bloody brilliant.' This is my favourite piece of writing by Mr. McMahon, and one of the best novellas I have read this year, or any year. This novella was impossible to put down and filled with crisp, intelligent writing that had lots of passages that made me want to stop up and read them again, however the engaging, terrifying plot demanded that you found out what happened next. So it will need a second reading indeed. This was excellent. And the format of the two novellas was also great.

Here's my review..Just finished this yesterday!

I am pleased to be able to wholeheartedly agree with all the other good reviews, simply put, this is great.

Gary has set a high mark with this one -it's his best work yet by a country mile.

The bleakness is subtler, the rage smoothed & honed. the writing cool & concise.

Both stories are really, really bloody good.

I hope you believe me, I really do, 'cos this is the ONE, Zed.

Only now, you gotta do another ONE...:-)

10 outta 10 Zeddo.

God bless you, fella. I'm thrilled you liked it. Let's hope the other six people who bought a copy feel the same way.

Six people? Seven, surely - I bought a copy too... Started it last night and although I haven't yet finished Even The Dead Die I have to agree with gcw's comments on it so far; it's excellent - there're no cracks to fall down in this book; good solid craftsmanship and a huge amount of "draw-you-in-ness"*

Owww catty!:-)

Selling things is the depressing downside to creating things...I yearn to be able to turn a completed album over to a 'team' and not have to worry about pushing it.

Music is practically worthless as a saleable commodity these days,..For instance a fine band I like are selling a double CD for just £4.44.

I am resigned to having to sell CD's at a low price in order to shift them, just like the feedback & the buzz of knowing someone, somewhere is listening (& maybe) digging my stuff...just a bit.

It's always been like this, yeah? Always the artist is struggling to get his/her work seen and in front of people, always making concessions to increase the number of eyes or ears on a project. The only difference between "then" and "now" is now we have the internet so all those people who once toiled in isolation now toil in public. Still, it's the same: we work for nothing and hope one day it magically becomes something.

Oh yes, I agree, but a few years ago it wouldn't be untoward to sell a CD for £8.00.

That would be unthinkable now, I bought Soozy U2's last album for £6.00 on the week of its release from a supermarket. I am lucky in that I have fairly low overheads to record & release my music, but if I was a full 'band' situation and couldn't record at home, I simply couldn't make the music I wanted to and pay the mortgage.

A little push can help matters though...By selling my 4 track EP for £3.00 as a pre-order for the album, I have already shifted more copies of the album 'A Parallelogram Of Suitcases' before I've even released it, than the last album.

Which is cool, because I know I have people to send the album to who hopefully will enjoy it when it comes out in January.
