What are the latest news about the Icelandic ash cloud shutting English airports off?
I am in Rome and waiting for books from UK and I suppose Royal Mail is keeping Airmail shipments in limbo until the skies are clean again.
Backlogs could endanger safe delivery of items, I hope not.
Well, it will be as the Gods choose (Hermes and Hephestus in primis.) A bit of Amor Fati could help with my apprehension!

Hi Giancarlo - well, the latest news is that flights won't resume until at least 1am tomorrow (tuesday), but I don't hold out too much hope as they keep changing these times and putting them further back every few hours.

Up here in the north of England, where we're apparently deep underneath it, I've spent the last two days gazing up into a cloudless, blue sky and feeling distinctly baffled.

However, we had rain overnight and when I went out to the car this morning, it was covered with large spots of ash. It just shows, perhaps we should believe everything we read in the press.

Hmmm, I hadn't thought of the effect of this no-fly zone over much of northern Europe on international postal services. You're right, Giancarlo, I guess Royal Mail will have to hang on to air mail until flights are up and running again.

Just my luck that I'm supposed to be flying down to see my old dad this weekend. Yes, I know I could do the 200+ miles by train, but the 5 hour train journey with two changes really takes a toll on my fragile health situation. So I've taken to flying (despite my dislike of the effect on my carbon footprint) as it only takes just over an hour (plus an hour's train journey) that way. I don't think I'll be able to go this weekend now ...

BTW the airlines have started saying that the restrictions should be lifted as they're being over-cautious, and there's talk of some airlines going out of business as a result of losing money. Makes you wonder, if the government do lift restrictions are they doing so because it really *is* safe to fly, or because of pressure from businesses? Hmmm, I might end up going back to travelling down south by train.

Mark my words, Caroline, in a few years time we'll all be back travelling by horse and cart!
