Well, there they all are. I'm at home. But tomorrow I shall join the hoolie. I leave this thread in preparation for reportage fresh from the front. The violence, the vomit. And that's just registration.

I'm home as well, Gary. Why can't I find you here, then? Have the cats hidden you somewhere?

...anyone seen copies of Andrew Hook's new book on tables yet?

Mr Fry, my worst fears are now become real. Thank goodness he's no longer able to successfully fire.

(in other news...) According to her Facebook status, Ms Lady Probert has brought five (5) corsets to FCon, and His Lordship at least as many ties and jackets. Considering it's only a 2.5 day event, it seems more than enough. Hell, that's enough for a fortnight vacation!

The most impressive range of outfits I ever saw was for a Sherlockian weekend in Montreal in 1990. I flew out to Toronto, and a group of us took the train from there to Montreal on the Thursday morning. One of our number - a lovely lady named Mary Campbell - boarded the train wearing slacks and a sweater. Shortly after departing Union Station she disappeared into the loo, and when she emerged was wearing a beautiful Victorian gown. This was the first of several she wore - each appropriate for the time of day - throughout the weekend, never appearing in the same outfit twice. Her dress for the banquet was simply splendid, and no one was surprised when she was given a special award at the dinner for devotion to the cause above and beyond the call of duty.

Twas a brilliant day. Still feeling like shite today though. Spent the train journey back home in the company of Chris Barker (only lives a wee while away from me)- a really funny and engaging man. And his new collection is really rather good too. I implore you to get a copy if you can.

Kate and I had the usual wonderful, heady, exhausting time. Massive thanks to everyone who came to my reading, and to the Pan Horror launch, which was terrific fun (they sold every copy - hurrah! And bloody well done Johnny). Somehow it was appropriate that we didn't get going till midnight and then had the lighting set to 'Argento Inferno Blue'. We made some great new weird acquaintances and it was a delight to yet again meet up with my very dear writing comrades (we all attended our first FCon together back in 2005 - awww) Gary Fry and Gary McMahon, the latter looking a little smarter but no less red-lipped for the cheap red wine he was knocking back. Hopefully there are still very few who suspect our covert bromance...

Otherwise there just wasn't enough time for everything - I didn't have a real chance to talk to Mick & Debs, or GCW. Soozy needed at least one more cuddle. Caroline was a really really lovely lady and I hope we get to bump into each other again soon, and John Forth and Esther were loads of fun to discuss trashy films (and trash in general with).

Joel Lane was as lovely as ever (and the Robert E Howard panel was splendid), Simon Kurt Unsworth did a great reading but by the time we said goodbye to him in the bar he was frankly unintelligible. Simon Bestwick has acquired a decent haircut and got rid of that beard and he's looking seriously smoooth. Reggie Oliver still has the beard (not Simon's) and Steve Volk, Mark Morris, David Riley and Johnny ("I'm not paying for THAT") Mains were great dining companions. Yet again Ramsey & Jenny Campbell were wonderful company.

Pete Crowther managed to spell the Probert name wrong (and thanks to Ramsey for pointing it out to everyone who came near a copy of The Seven Days of Cain) and then further compounded his crime by eating crisps loudly while I was reading 'His Beautiful Hands', but apart from that faults at FCon were few and far between. In fact we had such a good time that even Guy Adams' plentiful allusions to our private life during the raffle were laughed off for the charming boisterousness that they were.

God we had a great time. Thank you everyone.

Among the "spoils", I can notice Paul Finch's "ONE MONSTER IS NOT ENOUGH".
I can't find the title over at Amazon, nor through any web search.
Can anyone in the Forum enlighten me about who's publishing the book, or how can it be obtained?
Thanks and thanks again!

Hi Giancarlo. Watch the Gray Friar Press site this week. I had the book delivered to FCon so that Paul could sign the copies (and to avoid my having to drive to Wigan and get him to sign them in the back of my car in the rain, like last time :-)). The book isn't officially released yet. But it's a stonking book: eight novellas and novelettes, four original, two award winners.

FCon was great. Thanks to everyone who helped make the Never Again launch a success, especially the witch and the wardrobe. Was great to see old muckers like Lord P and his lovely Lady, Mr and Mrs Finch, GCW and Soozy, John Travis, Stu Young, Mick and Debs, Simon dudey Bestwick, Steve Bacon, Mark West, Terry Grimwood, Mc and Em, and so many others. Made some new friends, too: the lovely Alison Littlewood and her hubbie, Stephen Theaker, Nick Wood, and more, more, more. Great party, guys.

We had a marvelous time. The heavy metal karaoke on Friday night was absolutely heaving with attendees, so many thanks to everybody who made that a huge success. The End of The Line preview launch went wonderfully too and we sold out of every single copy we brought with us.
It was great to hear Paul Meloy read from a new story that was powerful stuff. Also Chaz's two stories were terrific fun and beautifully lyrical. Like classic Ray Bradbury.
As ever it was great to catch up with old friends and make new ones.
The editors panel was fun, and it was very interesting to see our varying takes on the genre and the differing (and often very similar ways) in which we work. I still feel a bit like the newbie (well I suppose I am) but my confidence is starting to build as the lines expand and our authors get a larger audience.

I'm absolutely knackered, so I'm going to let Lord P's post stand for both of us. But I have to say thanks to everyone who bought copies of Black Book 7 and Never Again - I'm thrilled to be in both! It was great to see so many friends again (who feel like old friends even though I've only been here a year) and to make so many new ones. I can't wait for the next con!

A memorable weekend, yes, with a rich and packed programme. The things I missed would make up a second great weekend in themselves. Thanks to Guy and the convention committee for seamless organisation. Special thanks to Soozy, GCW and Simon B. for helping me with some slight health issues. The Never Again launch and the Howard panel were stand-out events for me. Wish I'd caught some more of the readings.

What a fantastic weekend! I'm really paying for it now though - glad I've got the next few days off work.

Highlights for me were:

1. Finally putting faces to names and finding out that you're all such lovely people. I'm not going to list all those I spoke to - you know who you are, and you're wonderful, all of you.

2. The readings - all great, but particularly outstanding was Reggie Oliver's reading from The Seventh Black Book of Horror - what a story! But it's unfair to pick out a "favourite" really - you were all fantastic. Lord P's readings stand out, of course. Joel, Simon B, etc - all brilliant. I wish I could write like you guys!

3. Buying several books, and getting some signed. Thanks to all of you who signed for me! Again, I have to pick out the Black Book as a particular favourite. I now have probably the most unique copy in the world - signed AND DOODLED (!!) by several of the contributors.

I did think that would be my most prized possession from the event (excluding the memories of it, of course), but then the following happened ...

4. I'm now the proud owner of an original piece of Bryan Talbot artwork! I don't mean the nice sketches he does in books when he signs them - I already have a few of those - I mean an ACTUAL ORIGINAL PAINTING OF HIS!

Did everyone miss the fact that he was inviting bids on some of his artwork in the art show? I thought I had no chance, that I was certain to get outbid - but I didn't, I got it, it's mine all mine! (PS: I'm a bit pleased about this - can you tell?)

5. Bumping into an old friend from my Pantechnicon days, who I thought I'd lost contact with. Lovely to see you again, old friend - and thanks for the hand-made K-9!

6. The raffle - my first ever experience of the FCon raffle. I didn't win a thing, but I laughed a heck of a lot. Guy Adams should be a stand-up comedian.

Phew! Not sure what else to say. I didn't go to too many panels - spent more time in readings as I love live readings - but those I did attend, eg. the Ray Bradbury panel, Bryan Talbot's interview - were great.

I'm very pleased with myself that I managed to get sufficient sleep, and take sufficient painkillers, to last the whole weekend. I'm really knackered now, but it was worth it.

Summing up - my best memory of the event? Well, it has to be finding out what lovely people you all are.

I must add that Charles Black proved yet again what a lovely man he is - I couldn't get to the Black Book of Horror no. 7 launch as I was at the Brighton thingy next door, so I asked Charles to hang on to a copy for me, as I didn't want to miss buying it.
Not only did he put a copy away under his desk for me, but he also got all the authors at the launch to sign it to me as well, which was a complete surprise! Lovely man!

Indeed Charles Black is a lovely man.

Highlights...

On the Friday evening I managed to get to four readings...
Simon Bestwick
Joel Lane
Nina Allan
Simon Kut Insworth
And on the Sunday John Travis....
All wonderful.

Really enjoyed the 'Get Real and Weird Fiction' panel that night.

Also the Lisa Tuttle interview with Steve Jones and the Never Again launch.

The great curry party!

Dani giving me the present of the Wine and Rank Poison cover to frame.

I managed to pick up Gary Fry's House of Canted Steps, Lisa Tuttle's Stranger in the House, Nina Allan's A thread of Truth and Blind Swimmer from Eibonvale. The Seventh Black Book of Horror, and that present for Heather, Alice in Sunderland which she adores with Bryan's personalised drawing of the Mad Hatter, for her. Weird Legacies edited by Mike Ashley. Joel's poetry books. Book swapped WARP with Peter Mark May's Kumiho and Andrew Hook's Ponthe Oldenguine.

Won't tell Alan just how much I spent yet...

I'm horribly shy and easily distracted - particularly when hungover! Plus I spent a lot of time carting books up to my room. Oh yeah, and drinking.

Brilliant to see that so many of you had such a great time. I did too, although it involved slightly less drinking and rather more administration:

Stu - Have to say you made me laugh out loud with that blog. That's the best of the lot, and I enjoyed reading them all, but yours was hilarious.

I am of course referring to the clip you have on your blog. Just in case you were wondering if I'd had a temporary labotomy...I know there's no such thing...unless you count twelve pints of Strongbow and six double shot whisky chasers...

Agreed - Stu, that was the funniest thing ever. You should write comedy.

What you missed out though was me leaning past you to whisper an answer to Pam, only to have her hiss back, through gritted teeth, "I know!"

Frank -- glad you liked the blog.

Mark -- you should probably make it clear that you were giving Pam an answer to one of the quiz questions not what she said in the curry house.

Zed -- shweaty bollocksh.

Zed - mate, Cary Grant and Jimmy Stewart (as he's known to his friends) were and still ARE towering acting greats. You mistake the superlative ease with which they slipped in and out of roles as everyman acting. I know, because I know everything about everything. Fry is no longer the officially renowned purveyor of 'I know nowt about films.' Zed the accolade is now yours.

I didn't say he'd never given a great performance. he does there. I just find him way too sentimental in most of what he's done - and Grant is just smug. Give me Robert Mitchum, Lee Marvin, Humphry Bogart, Spencer Tracy any day of the week.

Ally, I think you sat alongside me and John Travis just as I was doing the world's worst James Stewart impression. "I'm going to sell him for money!"

James Stewart: The Pimp Years.

For anyone who wants to see the "I'm going to sell him for money" line done properly it's up at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IXkEMcj0G1A Be warned that the clip gives away the ending to Stewart's film The Naked Spur.

You seem to mistake 'tough' guy actors with a bunch of inveterate alcoholics (:...besides, JS joined up in the WWII and flew missions on bombers in and out of Germany...he joined up...mind you, Lee was an ace sniper stationed out in the Pacific, so I'll call that a draw...anyway...the point is, you mistake roles for acting...yes, you do, you Zeddy Boy...am I right, or am I right...

Actually, the lot you mentioned were great actors. They ALL are. I'd like to know why De Niro has apparently an intense dislike of Bogart as an actor. I was reading some article about the remake of 'We're No Angels', and De Niro avoided any mention of comparing the two in the same role.

If only Travis would show such imagination when writing... or when deciding who to hang around with... or who should publish his works... we'd all be in a lot of trouble.

I feel that both Stewart and Grant are brilliant in nearly anything. Likewise, I'll watch anything involving Orson Welles, even that bit of toss which is the original Casino Royale with 87 different James Bonds. Bogart, while quite accomplished, is someone I'd like to enunciate more clearly overall (although I'll strike anyone in the face who says that The Caine Mutiny isn't a brilliant peace of film); watching him opposite Katherine Hepburn is like seeing both ends of the spectrum meeting one another to demonstrate circles.

...but back to Stu and FantasyCon. Damn, you're good!
