Happy birthday, Gary! Just remember that as you grow older, certain fundamental choices remain the same and don't get any easier. Pakora or bhaji? Jalfrezi or pathia? Merleau-Ponty can't help you.

But it's not, Joel. As I've got older and my body's started to fall apart, I've actually got a lot happier. I put it down to my second childhood. For me, that started around the age of 40-something.

What I do find disconcerting as I grow older, is the sense that time is accelarating. Happily, I'm not nearly falling apart. My eyesight is not what it was and I get tired more easily - but that is all, for the time being.

And just remember, nowadays, 40's the new 30.

... unfortunately, that's to 50 year-olds and above. To those actually 30 and below, 40's the new 60. But then 60's the new 40 to 75 year-olds - so in 20 years, yay! You'll be 40 again!

Joel, I've been doing things in my 40s that my 20-something self could only ever have dreamed of!

It comes from the confidence of knowing what makes women tick, after decades of groping my way... if you catch my drift.

Happy birthday.

40's good.

I'm 54 and I've become a teenager again. My kids are grown up and fighting their own battles and all I do is play. I've got a loads of toys (harmonicas, two guitars [be great if I could play just one of them well], a telescope, a million cds, a billion books, I write when I want, see my grandson and wind him up to a fever pitch then hand him back to his mum and dad etc etc). Yeah I have to work but I can take that in my stride these days.

Plus, all that accumulated wisdom and sleek grey hair makes one irresisstable to women. Why, they'e alway giving up their seats on buses and trains (sometimes I even remember to get on the right one) for me and calling me dear and love and telling me to sit down and have a little rest.

But seriously, have a good one and know that in my opinion, you are a skilled, original, clever and very very good writer.

Cheers
Terry

Just as a serious aside, isn't the realisation that life is rubbish a source of pleasure? That is, it's when you think life isn't rubbish and it actually is, that you're unhappy. But when you know it's rubbish and it is, then you're happy, because there's no gap between perception and reality.

Me, I think life is shit and I'm ecstatically content! :-)

But I am being serious.

I've learned that being 50 is shit (for me), but I've yet to reach but only a low level of contentment over it.

Hoping that improves, though.

To a 55 year old like me, you're practically a teenager. So act accordingly; take as many drugs as you can and wake up on someone's lawn in a car you can't remember stealing.

Weber, listen closely to the lyrics of 'Find Her Finer' by Frank Zappa for therein lies wisdom... pile on the flattery, humour, cheese, a touch of bravado, laced with vulnerability, don't mention the ex, play dumb, avoid drooling, lots of cheeky innuendo without descending into crudity (unless she does first) & all delivered with the air of a gentlemanly rogue. Depending on the woman she'll either jump on you or call the police.

Then again you could just try being yourself. Though in your case, Weber, I'd leave out the jokes.
