More self-publicity I'm afraid, but this one is my best shot – 13 years went into it.

I'm very happy to tell you that my book Where Furnaces Burn will be launched by PS Publishing at Fantasycon in late September.

WFB collects together a series of 22 supernatural crime stories, all set in the West Midlands. It's my attempt to blend the occult detective and urban noir traditions, revealing the myths and terrors buried within the industrial landscape.

Four of these stories have appeared or are forthcoming in 'year's best' horror or crime anthologies. Six appear in this book for the first time.

I've now seen the cover illustration (in the form of the signing sheets) and it looks wonderful.

Correction to earlier notes: there are 26 stories, a total of 72,000 words.

I like the art, but the fonts are sort of lazy on all these pics.

Very nice cover painting. Is it oil? Acrylic? Digital?

On reflection I think Tony's right about the fonts, they do look too neat, but this is an industry-wide phenemenon. Surely the artist should be allowed to hand-paint the fonts and the publisher can then manipulate them on a digital transparent layer as they see fit. Maybe the publishers want to maintain that control, though.

The website gives details of the painting used - on the left of the screen. It's not an original piece of art designed for this book. The writing has been added in. I must say i think it looks rather spiffing.

I like the cover - very classy. Nothing wrong with the lettering as far as I can see.

It just struck me as a little schizophrenic. If it had stuck with one or a similiar font to the other it would have worked better.
But this is my arty eye speaking - it's still a book out, and that's good.

Fonts are the most contentious issue in the universe. The UN has long been powerless to bring about talks between the serif and sans serif factions. A treaty was drawn up, but representatives of the two sides came to blows over whether it should be in Ariel or Palatino.

I fondly recall a news report from The Onion a decade ago regarding the 46th International Font Awards (or 'Fontys' as they are known among the page layout community) in Pittsburgh. The journal reported that over 500 typesetters and graphic designers had gathered to celebrate innovation and creativity in the font world. The highlight of the evening was when the much-coveted Font of the Year Award was won by Times New Roman for the 46th successive year.

Ha!
Thing is, these things ARE important. I've not bought books because little details were wrong, misjudged. I like to feel care has been taken, the spell fully carried out to the nth degree.

I would say the WFB cover combines archaic and modern visual elements, matching the approach of the book.
