I thought you might be a statue hunter in your spare time, Des, and these were photos from your latest tracking expedition!

Reading this thread, I've just had this wonderfully surreal vision of all the statues going for a walk in the countryside leaving behind "statue droppings" - and Des photographing them!

Craig, I found them close to where I live - quite near the sea - and they are on one of my regular walks. I've never seen anyone else on that walk, I've no idea what they really are. So they must be statue spore. The only logical thing to think.

And you live in... the Netherlands? I'm blanking. Fascinating!

They're probably relics from the Roman Empire - hey! If they're just sitting there, Des, you should snag them and take them home and sell them on ebay. Tell them they're from a statue of Constantine or Augustus or something. You'd make bank!

Though there is the possibility they are giant eggs - eggs that sprout statues? Perhaps, but what is that myth of the dragon's teeth that are buried, that result in the seven warriors of Thebes or something?... hmm.....

They're really large and heavy and *appear* to be modern man-made. (Holland Haven, Essex, within a longish DFL constitutional walking-distance near where I live).
Are therse stone UFOs, now grounded?
Or their spore?

What size are they precisely? Judging by the plants next to them I'd guess about 2 foot tall at most and about 6 foot long

That sounds right, but I might be walking there tomorrow and I'll measure them. There's no worry about anyone watching me do that - because I've never seen anyone else in that glade (or anywhere near it) and it is on my regular route from somewhere to somewhere else busy doing nothing.

Have they only just appeared, Des, or have they always been there since you've been walking that route?

This is a fascinating piece of joint detective work to find out what they are!

They've always been there - but I only found that particular walk about a year ago after living here for 16 years. A part of it is through a very overgrown path (not by Janacek!).

Walking away from that area nearer to the sea, I then saw yhis in the sky over the treetops:

Re above. I'd guess the largest is about 5 foot long, 2 feet wide, and 1.5 feet height. I forgot to take a tape measure.

Stop press: the statue stools were left by the statue of Winston Chrchill on its nocturnal walks. Critics have commented that it was doing what Conservative leaders usually do to the nation's property, i.e. shit on it from a height. However, Conservative Central Office have said that the stone Churchill was merely fulfilling its statue Tory obigations.

There's some woods in the valley at the back of my town I tend to visit a fair bit, but I haven't been to the far side of them for a few years since some bad storms tore away chunks of the river bank and destroyed the path. I decided to go back yesterday (having to get ankle deep in a bog to get there) and found this quite wonderful landscape of huge mossy boulders and great stark-white, jagged dead trees, almost as if the destruction of the path had cut off the flow of life to that part of the woods. It all had a bit of a Pet Sematary feel about it.
