*sings - Lady In Red*

Oh, how I hate that song. Me and hubby immediately switch off the radio when that comes on (seems to be a favourite on the "golden oldies" type radio station which hubby likes in the car).

You don't really like Chris de Burgh, do you Stevie?

(oh hell, I've got Lady In Red on the brain now )

Actually, I'd forgotten he'd done "A Spaceman Came Travelling" - I don't mind that one as a nice, innocent little ditty. There aren't many SF songs around. The only other one which springs immediately to mind is The Carpenters' "Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Earth" or something like that.

Oh, and of course, Bowie's "Starman" - how could I forget that?

>>10. 'It Came Out Of The Sky' by Creedence Clearwater Revival - on 'Willy And The Poor Boys' (1969)<<

Stevie, I love you (in a purely platonic way, of course). I don't know anyone else who would even know that particular track. I used to have all Creedence's albums - had a bit of a crush on John Fogarty when I was a kid.

And how could I forget Zappa, Beefheart and Floyd (sounds like a strange firm of solicitors )?

I must say, Stevie, you produce the best lists I've ever seen.

"Vermillion Sands" by The Buggles. Their Adventures in Modern Recording album is very Ballardesque in its imagery. And from their first: "Living in the Plastic Age", with the great line "They send the heart police to put you under cardiac arrest".

Thank you, Caroline, as I said your sanity is beyond reproach.

I have all the Creedence albums on remastered CD. One of the greatest bodies of raw pop/rock tracks ever recorded imo. John Fogarty had an ability to turn out short sharp effortlessly catchy tunes that rivalled Ray Davies for a while. Their music is immortal.

Great track, John, with Johnny Marr guesting on guitar - as I'm sure you knew. There has always been a somewhat bleak sci-fi influence in David Byrne's lyrics and paranoid persona: 'Life During Wartime', 'Air', 'Moon Rocks', 'Road To Nowhere', 'Radiohead', 'Mommy, Daddy, You And I', 'The Dream Police', etc...

I have the early demo tapes of Frank & Don mucking about when they were teenagers, including the creation of the Captain Beefheart persona - intergalactic hero of the universe - and Frank's first attempt at a mini rock-opera, 'I Was A Teenage Malt Shop'. Magical stuff.

To think two such iconoclastic musical geniuses just happened to be best mates/rivals at school!

What mighty musical taste from little acorns may spring... or something like that.

Can any of us be blamed for the tastes of our fumbling childhood? My earliest memory of falling in love with "music" was 'Lily The Pink' by Scaffold - still superior to CdB's entire recorded output.

I'd rather not listen to anyone below about the 1,000 mark, Mick.

Daniel O'Donnell can be unintentionally hilarious, as you'll know if you've ever heard 'Pretty Little Snowflake' or seen his chat show (yes, seriously), whereas, the thought of Robbie Williams besmirching the name of Frank Sinatra in that fucking atrocious "duet" version of 'It Was A Very Good Year' (the single greatest crime ever committed against popular music) tends to send me into a psychotic rage. I take my music very seriously...

So do I, but I've seen footage of Williams live and he can definitely hold a crowd in the palm of his hand. I saw him in the flesh at Live8 but he struggled a bit there... His 'American Songbook' stuff sounds like a horrible idea and I've heard none of it.
A friend is a huge fan of Daniel O'Donnell but apart from Cliff Richard and Il Divo she doesn't seem that interested in music (pretty obvious from that selection)...

Technically Williams is the better "artist" than O'Donnell (although this is like comparing the potency of different stenches) and my listing is purely a personal reaction to the man and his music. I simply can't abide Williams whereas I think O'Donnell is merely a talentless buffoon. I can't believe we're even having this discussion!!

Jethro Tull are one of my fav prog rock bands of the 70s, Caroline, and would def be in the Top 100. I think Ian Anderson is very underrated as a songwriter and saw them live in the Ulster Hall in Belfast back in the 80s. They were fantastic!

I think he has the makings of a showman, in a good way. Trouble is, I think it all went to his head a long time back. He co-wrote a lot of his own stuff, though, which is more than some folk have done (including Sinatra !).
However, I'm not a fan of his at all so no, I can't believe we're discussing this either. Back to my Brotherhood of Man collection...

No one can match Sinatra for interpretation of a song, Mick. I'm a huge fan and have all of his Capitol albums and the best of the later stuff.

I was a passenger in a car once when Williams supposed "duet" with the great man came on the radio and I swear I thought it was a joke, someone's idea of a sick wind-up... until the chilling reality sank in and I had one of those moments of staring into a dark void of despair for the human race while another little bit of my soul died. That's why he's 34,527th in my rankings, just behind Mr Blobby.

I saw them at Harrogate Royal Hall the week before last - I'm still grinning from ear to ear. It's their "Thick as a Brick" anniversary tour. Performed the whole of TAAB in the first half complete with theatrics (first time it's been performed live since the seventies), and then the newly-penned TAAB2 in the second half (must be the first "concept album" released in a long time - looks at what might have happened to Gerald Bostock in the last 40 years). Wonderful stuff!

I only ever saw Tull once, at the Royal Albert Hall back in the late 'seventies. I recall enjoying it but not knowing much about them at the time I couldn't say what they played.
Just had a look at "setlist.fm" but can't even find mention of the band playing the RAH much less what they played.

Thank you for the BOM lyrics Caroline - i had Save all your kisses as an earworm for about an hour...

Out of desparation I deliberately started humming Star Trekkin by The Firm to get rid of it. "There's Klingons on the starboard bow starboard bow starboard bow, there's klingons on the starboard bow, scrape 'em off Jim!"

Also, considering that no one here had mentioned Daniel O'donnell previously, I think Stevie bringing him into the debate is a clear guilty consience showing. You can be sure that in the front row of every D O'D concert you'll find Stevie throwing his underwear at the veteran Irish entertainer...

Stevie: did you ever get a chance to pick this up?

http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2011/dec/21/lost-captain-beefheart-album-bat-cha in-puller

It's awesome, of course; comes with a great long booklet. A must for the Beefheartophile!

Christ!! I had no idea this had been released!

Thanks, Craig. This is the notorious lost studio album from 1976 that was recorded on the back of his Zappa collaboration, 'Bongo Fury', and led to the two of them irrevocably falling out after having been such close friends. I have got to get this!! And I still haven't tracked down a copy of 'Lick My Decals Off, Baby' either. This shall be corrected post-haste.

I read about this on a music forum some time back. Be interesting to the the early versions of some of the songs.

Uhm. Back to de Burgh. When I was working as a painter and decorator, if his song High On Emotion was played on the radio - you work as a painter and decorator, I'm afraid Radio One's all you get to listen to, and so it did appear every now and again - we'd sing along at the top of our voices, but wittily change the lyrics to 'High on Emulsion'. Zany days.

Life's too short to hate anyone, but i'm not a fan of Mr dB.

His new album, Storeyteller, or something, is a quid in Asda.

Do get the CD, Stevie. That booklet alone is practically a book in itself, which I've yet to get to, but've been meaning to.... I'm unaware of that whole backstory, but I do know that these songs must have been released in some form, somewhere, because I've heard this album before, probably even own it somewhere - I knew all these songs already - maybe there was a pirate version floating around for a long time. It's a great album! (So is Lick My Decals Off, Baby!)

This newly released version is the one Beefheart worked on with Zappa & Herb Cohen immediately after the 'Bongo Fury' collaboration album and was praised by Frank as the Captain's finest work since 'Trout Mask Replica' (but he would say that). Apparently they fell out over royalties or something and the material couldn't be released because of the protracted legal battle that followed, or some such crap, and it sadly led to an irrevocable split and much bad feeling between Frank & Don, that was never patched up in their lifetimes. Beefheart then went on to re-record much of the material for his 1978 album, 'Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller)', which is great in itself but reputedly much different from and inferior to the 1976 'Bat Chain Puller'.

It's the old story of rock star egos clashing and friendships being destroyed because of professional pride but at least we can now hear the album as originally envisioned and judge if Zappa's opinion of it was justified.

Nothing closetted about Stevie's love for the becardiganned one. His most treasured DVDs are a box set of the entire run of the Val Doonican show.

The one where Val and Roger did a duet is his absolute favourite though. He watches it 3 times a day at least.

Some Stevie news

He is alive and well and living in the Mojave desert where it hardly ever rains. He's in a teepee making daily sacrifices of Gila monsters to the sun gods. And the kitten scratches on his hands arms neck leg and neck make him look like a hard c*** so he's fitting in well with the natives. He just tells them he's been wrestling satan up the arroyo and they give him a by ball. It's not perfect but it's a good life.

He's also worked out that as the bat guano is too hard to smoke, he's letting it dry out and powdering it so he can snort it through rolled up bat wings. There's nothing like snorting a bit of bat shit.

Mine would be, currently (and in order): The Rolling Stones, Fleetwood Mac, Talking Heads, Captain Beefheart, Simple Minds, Frank Zappa, David Bowie, Lennon/Ono (in their various incarnations, together and alone), Neil Young, Eurythmics.

... and I've never heard of The Bevis Frond!

The Bevis Frond consists of one unfeasibly talented singer/songwriter, virtuoso guitarist, bass player, drummer and keyboardist called Nick Saloman, from Walthamstow. Think a kind of English psychedically flavoured classic rock equivalent of Prince, without the dancing, and you're halfway there. Brilliant stuff!

21. Manic Street Preachers
22. The Flaming Lips
23. David Bowie
24. Horslips
25. The Beatles
26. The Rolling Stones
27. Pere Ubu
28. The Cramps
29. The Magnetic Fields
30. The Catherine Wheel

and so on...
