...I am sure he has been well discussed here, but while I am laid up with the buggered neck & arm I have been reading his 'London Revenant'. It's bloody great stuff too...dreamy...surreal and very 'London' just enough wierd to keep you turning. Very impressed...I will read more by this chap, it reminds me a bit of Clive Barker when i read 'The Damnation Game' - sorta bursting with potential. Conrad's a fantastic writer- I can't think of anything he's done that's not worth reading. RAIN and THE SCALDING ROOMS are both brilliant; so's his other novella, GAME. THE UNBLEMISHED is a total fucking classic. The last few years have seen a real explosion of new work from him, and with more to come. | ||

Yes, THE UNBLEMISHED is phenomenal. The shifts of mood and perspective, the interweaving of weird history and blighted geography, the black humour, the lyricism, the richness of morbid detail, the sheer bleak fury of it all... I'm never keen on gore, but Conrad offers something better and other than gore: a seething recurrent dream of the body ruined; a dream informed by scientific knowledge, artistic imagination and emotions from another realm. Conrad's perspective, as a writer, combines tenderness and compassion with their complete opposite. That's frightening. | ||

"Rain" is a shocking book - I got to the end of it and felt like I'd been in a fight. I have "Unblemished" on my reading pile but have loved what I've read so far. | ||

I thought both 'The Unblemished' and 'ONE' were fantastic reads. I've just got hold of his latest 'Decay Inevitable' which is on my to read pile. Anyone read that one yet? | ||

Yes- really, really enjoyed it. Not quite as intense as ONE- it's more multi-layered, told from various different viewpoints, and with stronger dark fantasy elements. Think early Michael Marshall Smith meets early Clive Barker- but much much darker. | ||

Just seen that he has his first crime novel out soon, 'Blonde On A Stick' (not sure about that title). A pretty prolific writer at the moment. |
