I'm pleased to say that work is coming along nicely on my forthcoming collection, Northwest Passages, due in October from Prime Books. It'll be published in an initial edition of 3000 hardback copies and a small number of signed, limited edition copies. The cover can be viewed on Sean Wallace's LiveJournal page.

There will be ten stories in all, two of them - 'Out and Back' and 'After' - original to the collection. 'Out and Back' is set at an abandoned amusement park, while 'After' deals with the infamous Kent murder case of 1860, and is in a way my tribute to James Hogg's brilliant The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner. The introduction, from which the cover blurb is taken, is by Michael Dirda.

To say I'm really pleased is an understatement. I think the cover looks great, and hope people feel the contents live up to it.

I think the cover is great - congratulations, Barbara! This is one I'm very much looking forward to - 'Northwest Passage' is one of my favourite stories of the last few years.

A shameless self-promotion moment here, to let folks know that my collection NORTHWEST PASSAGES is now available from Prime Books; one of the highlights of World Fantasy in San Jose was seeing copies of the book for the first time. It's a very handsome volume, if I do say so myself as shouldn't, and it's had some very kind words from a number of people: our host says of it "As an editor Barbara Roden has always borne the torch for the classical ghost story, and in Northwest Passages she demonstrates that as a writer she is just as much an asset to her field. Sensitively and stylishly written, these tales convey that frisson of spectral terror that the aficionado always seeks but too seldom finds. They have all the strengths of their tradition, which Barbara Roden brings gracefully up to date."

As far as I know, the only dealer in the UK stocking the title is Andy Richards, who doesn't yet have copies. I have copies here, and if anyone is interested in getting an inscribed copy the cost is US$30.00 for anyone in the States or Canada, and US$35.00 for anyone in the rest of the world (the price includes postage, air mail to RoW). If anyone would like more information, e-mail me at nebuly@telus.net.
