Ramsey, is this the issue with the article about the 'new wave at 50'? If so, I just bought a copy the other day! I'll have to hunt down these in-jokes...

"Ramsey, is this the issue with the article about the 'new wave at 50'?"

Huw, no - that's the May issue. The latest is the June issue, with Penelope Cruz on the cover.

What's the film, Craig? I don't know of any currently released films by any of Braindead's writers.

Thanks, Mick - I thought it might be, as I couldn't find any evidence of in-jokes after scouring the May issue. We get magazines (from other countries) late over here...

Thanks, Craig. Have you seen the film? Which writer from Braindead was involved (I thought that film was written by Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh)?

I just looked at its entry over on the IMDB, and saw one Ramsey Aickman and quite the collection of Campbells among the character list! I have not looked at everything there yet, but I don't think anyone has mentioned the Ramsey Aickman/Campbell references yet...

My bad, Huw:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0099173/

The other Brain Dead, based on a Charles Beaumont story.

I've not seen The Haunting in Connecticut, though I heard it wasn't bad.

Talking about Peter jackson's Brain Dead - he apparently finished shooting three days early with a wad of money left over. They decided to write and shoot an extra scene to slot into the film to make it a bit longer just because they could. That scene was the scene where they took the baby to the park. IMHO the funniest scene in the film.

I just watched this tonight and was wondering if they were giving some tips of the hat to Ramsey? The town they are in is called Goatswood. The one guy is named Ramsey. The families last name is Campbell. Seems to me it all fits. Has it ever been publicly stated that it was their intent to do so?

I saw the Ramsey Aickman thing. I was a bit shocked as in most other ways it felt like the film's makers weren't really into either. Gotta be flattering, though.

I thought the film had a few Campbellian moments: the shadowy character seen in the TV set, which turned and walked away, for instance. Nice touch. Other instances were too heavy-handed, however, like the figure in the mirror accompanied with a great thump of the soundtrack. No, not heavy-handed; rather, attempting to sting the sluggish horse of its typical audience's attention into life like some persistent gadfly. On the whole, aHiC was a solid film with some creepy imagery, but ultimately too bombastic to be truly memorable. Giddy direction didn't help: Horror as MTV. A 6/10 from me.

I just watchd HIC last night (in a double bill with Mirrors) and enjoyed it quite a lot. It would have been so much better if they hadn't insisted on punctuating every creepy moment and half glimpsed ghost with a huge loud blast of some bass instrument or other on the sooundtrack

It was almost as though they didn't trust the audience to see them so thety were shouting at us to say "look we're trying to scare you here!"

Having said that, the central performance by the young man playing Matt Campbell was extremely good.

Mirrors was good fun. I loved his sister's demise. spectactularly tasteless.

I agree with both Gary and Weber. The 'jolt in the soundtrack every time something vaguely creepy happens' really annoys me, but I didn't think the film was all that bad, overall.

I liked the in-jokes - Ramsey Aickman, Matt Campbell, Goatswood... wonder if there were any more?

I preffered Mirrors in that it was more nightmarish. I hated that sister's death, though; there's a line between being upsetting and being scary that I don't feel able to walk anymore, these days. :-(

Much more difficult to get hold of as well (especially without paying!!!). I've never seen Into the Mirror(?) in HMV which is unfortunately the best local source for foreign language DVDs.

I have to confess ignorance here as well that I didn't know Mirrors was a remake of an asian film till I saw the end credits.

I'll keep an eye out for it.

I'm with Ramsey - Into the Mirror is vastly superior to Mirrors! Good luck finding a copy, Weber - it's well worth seeking out. It's far more suspenseful and creepy, not to mention more emotionally-charged and thought-provoking. The relationships between the characters are far more convincing too.

"Me in the mirror will kill me!" was the tagline on the huge display boards they had in front of cinemas when I went to see it (must've been in 2004).

Watched aHiC the other night with my brother and we both enjoyed it immensely and were jumping at each scare as though we were on a roller coaster. Ultimately, I agree the soundtrack jolts are too obvious but it was a pretty decent film and had some good scares too. Certainly a lot of fun. Though having Virginia Madsen in it meant my brother and I kept intoning, "Helllll-ennnn..." from time to time.

And the in-jokes really made me grin. I'd forgotten all about this thread, so when "Ramsey Aickman" came up in the film it was a delightful surprise.

Here's Into the Mirror -

- though the Region 3 transfer is superior.

Thanx Ramsey

Technical question - my DVD player plays UK and US DVD's. Does that mean it will automatically play region 3 as well or can multi-region still be limited to 2 regions only?

Is it a region-free player or a multi-region? the distinction can be crucial.
