Anyone been watching it this week? I'm bloody loving it - which is curious, because I didn't like the previous episodes I'd seen of the show at all.

It seems to be a universal response this time round Gary... the only other episode I really enjoyed was the one were Gwen was pregnant at her wedding.

I also love the fact that its event based TV.

Torchwood is worth rewatching. I didn't love it till I'd dropped my expectations and watched it a second time; practically every episode was better.
And get this; it's date telly, Mr and Mrs stuff, better enjoyed cuddling on the sofa.

Oh, ep two was berserk! The concrete block dropped off a cliff by a Ianto (or 'Wanko' as my youngest calls him), who somehow bothered to dress up as Bob the Builder to do it. Jack would have been torn to pieces, resulting in another one of his gasps.
Yes, I enjoyed it. And have discovered it's probably best watched with kids, which I did.

Tonight's episode was just gob-smackingly good. I'd never thought I'd see the day when I was this taken with Torchwood. Brilliant, adult SF.

Been watching with the missus as well. We enjoyed series 1 and 2 which had some cracking adult orientated sci-fi/horror themed episodes throughout. The series one episode 'Countrycide' springs to mind. A cross between Deliverance and Texas Chainsaw Massacre !

My other half is a huge Who/Torchwood fan and I've slowly warmed to it over time, so much so that I've now got all the New Who boxsets on my shelf. But Children of Earth has really upped the quality; it's become what it always had the potential to be finally. Absolutely loved it so far.

I feel sad though, like those old Spandau Ballet fans did before they went mainstream. I want to love old crappy Torchwood all on my own again, not have all these new people like it!
Er, that is a joke.

Am now fully caught up with Children Of Earth. Simply incredible- rivetting, compelling television. The fourth episode... Jesus Christ. This is exactly what the series was always supposed to be like. Terrifying- and the worst monsters aren't the 456, but ordinary-looking people sat round an ordinary-looking table.

What are the odds of Lois joining the Torchwood team after this, do you reckon? Although I'm kind of hoping we see more of Johnson as well- I actually rather like the character.

(Always assuming any of them are left alive after this, of course...)

Has a touch of the John Wyndham's about it, doesn't it? if only a light touch. Nice to see they're finally getting to grips with it -- using Cap Jack's age and indestructability as a plot device, instead of a get out of jail free card -- even if there's still a lot of silliness about it. Missed last night's, as we were out with some of Michelle's friends having a shandy or two. But we taped it. Will try watch before this evening's finale.

When I watched Torchwood (first series) my only expectations were for a reasonably good Doctor Who type spin-off. It was a huge disappointment on every level, which only a few scenes here and there to raise it above the level of... well, I can't think (offhand) of a worse show to compare it to, frankly. Series 2 was more or less the same, I thought. I couldn't relate to or sympathise with any of the characters, who I found to be a bland, unlikeable bunch.

I'm curious now that so many people are raving about the new one, though. Did they get new writers and directors in, or something? I thought Chibnall's writing on the previous shows was at times embarrassingly bad. Was he replaced?

Primeval isn't perfect (although the third series was really quite good), but I find it infinitely preferable to Torchwood.

The prevuous episodes of Torchwood I've seen have been utter crap - embarassingly so, actually - but this one was brilliant. I absolutely loved it. It had that "I" words Lord P and I always batter on about: integrity.

Zed- totally agree on that, mate. The final episode was stunning. I don't know if this marks the end for Torchwood or not (sod's law if it ended just as it realised its potential) but if it was the end, it was a hell of an ending.

Primeval wasn't bad (bit repetitive for me) but it has been cancelled now. To be replaced no doubt by another video clip show or dancing cum singing cum skating cum cooking cum sitting around doing nothing much show that we clearly need more of. Quality TV is a rarity in this bold new century of bland scheduling. I have seen the future and it is 'On Demand' . Choosing what you want to watch and when is the way forward.

I overheard someone saying today that Torchwood will return if the viewing figures were impressive enough (no surprises there!) I'd read that they were an improvement on BBC2's, but whether that is enough to sustain a recommission, I'm not sure...

Despite its occasional duffness and daftness and, as Justin points out, overwroughtness, I was rather enjoying TORCHWOOD in the new format. And then it all went very pear-shaped last night, I thought. FOr me, the ending felt like just another Torchwood episode spun out to an hour . . . Nice to see an openly gay action hero, though. Ah well. Was fun for a while.

Typical. After slogging through one and a half series of shit Torchwood the series finally becomes good after I stop watching it.

Actually, I did watch the first five minutes of the first episode but gave up when it looked like it was going to be pretty much the same standard as the previous two series just moving at a slower pace.

And then, just 'cos everyone was raving about it, I watched last night's episode which seemed fairly decent. Probably 'cos the charisma-free zone that is John Barrowman was off-screen for most of the time. Actually, he wasn't as bad as usual in the few scenes he did feature in and obviously I can't judge his performance for the rest of this series so I don't know whether that was a fluke.

The ending was obviously set up so that if Torchwood doesn't get renewed there's an explanation for why Captain Jack doesn't keep cropping up in Dr Who but it's an explanation that can be easily reversed if the viewing figures are high enough to get another series.

I'm still undecided as to whether I actually care.

Saw it last night. It held together well and there was no backing away from the sacrifice that had to be made. I'll definately be watching it when it comes back on the telly.

Went to a Torchwood book signing (Guy Adams, Sarah Pinborough and Mark Morris) the other night. Joined Zeddy for a chinese and to raise a glass to them later. Great to see you Zed! Good night. And congrats to Guy who is a member of this board.

I thought last night's was terrific.

As Stu says, Barrowman is rubbish, but the actress who plays Gwen is superb - she has this genuine warmth and you can't help liking the character.

The moral dilemmas were well realised, and the sacrifice at the end was heartbreaking, and they didn't cop out in any way: to save the world, you must lose something that you love and things can never be the same again.

Barnstorming telly, IMHO.

Well, I've just finished watching it - at its best, it was better than Torchwood has been in the past, although that could be seen as damning it with faint praise.
However, the good parts were pretty good in my opinion - the idea of the most scary people in it being the government(s) was well carried out, if not that original.
Plus, I'm really glad we didn't get to see the alien properly - that would've been a real letdown, I feel.
I agree with Zed about the moral issues, and about not copping out - it could have been easy to...

SPOILER ALERT

...have the boy nearly croak at the end but just pull through.

I do it cos I got a new phone on a great tarif, Ali. I,m experimenting still. Don't do MySpace or Facebook, etc. I've free light net access on it. And it's how I'm accessing the rcmb right now. I enjoy the infrequent tweets from nasa (kepler mission at moment) and stuff about M.E. But yes, someone tweeting in LOLs and that they're off to work have little time with me.

Mind, it's funny to read how the rich folk live, with talk of foreign travel so casually dropped in, the executive lounges at airports etc.

I can see Torchwood's failings very easily but yes, it meant what it was doing, like an earnest cartoon (?). Daft but somehow affecting despite everything.
Best bit? The sickening 'deciding which kids get it' bit with the government (that said, my idea was to 'give them all the naughty kids.'
I actually really like Barrowman. I was saying to someone the other day he'd be the ultimate Clive Barker hero if the two of them got their head together.
