I actually recommended Leonid Andreyev's "Lazarus" to Skipp. Glad to see it it there. And much-deserved congrats to Mr. Duffy!!

Steve's one of those writers who, when I read something new by him, makes me think 'Why do I bother writing?' One of the best talents out there on the contemporary scene, and sadly under-appreciated, I think. Glad to see him getting this recognition. And I'm just a little pleased because I'm the one who recommended 'Lie Still, Sleep Becalmed' to the editor. Congrats, Steve!

I couldn't possibly hate Steve Duffy - he's too nice a guy, and too good a writer.

Could make a case for a few others, mind.

Did anyone ever hear anything more about that proposed British remake of The Godfather, starring Terry Wogan as Don Corleone? Last I heard the development was stalled at casting stage. I understand the BBC, mindful auntie to the tee, had made him an offer he could refuse.

I am SO there!

As it should be, Simon. Which brings me back to the thread of this header: why 'hate' someone who is good and successful. Envy, sure. But hate? Surely that should be reserved for the miscreants whose aim in life is to disrupt decent internet (or other) chat amongst mates? Frankly I don't have the energy for 'hate'; life's too short.

Go, Stevie. . . .

Are you serious?

You should drop by more often (that is, other than when you're trying to sell us something or make snarky comments). Then you'd realise that Steve and I have been in regular amicable dialogue and that when I say "I hate", it's perfectly obvious that I mean nothing of the sort.

Frankly, I'm getting a little tired of the Auntie Rodens coming on this message board every once in a blue moon and taking the high moral ground. I recall a few years ago, when I suggested that I was having a few problems fulfilling customer orders, getting a massive public lecture about the importance of supplying customers with what they've paid for soonest, no excuses about being a one-man operation or difficulties getting to the Post Office, etc. Well, I was talking about a week or two's delay...they've had my and others' money for years:

(checks fresh posts) But "regular amicable dialogue" is still a good place to start, the best place in fact. And perhaps a quick round of withdrawn comments all round would be the best way to proceed at this stage?

I really don't know what to say.

Sorry: too busy working two jobs at the moment to formulate a coherent response. All I can say is that if I'm seen to be 'taking the moral high ground' then I apologise, and shall withdraw quietly.

Does Christopher really think the 'hate' was meant in this thread? I'm astonished. First, that he did; and second, that he felt the need to point it out.

It beggars belief.

I'm not really the person to be asking, Gary, in all frankness.

And I'd really rather that, if you have a beef with someone, you take it up with them, and not drag me into it. Last time I checked, I was my own person, with my own thoughts and views and posts. And I think my posts here have been temperate and thoughtful. If others disagree, then of course I'll apologise and leave.

OK, I apologise to you, although it was from you I received the moral lecture about fulfilling order after I'd offered exactly the same reasons for not being able to fulfil orders as quickly as I would like.

But I do apologise for that.

But I'll now ask Christopher whether I should expect an apology from him about completely misunderstanding this thread?

Gary, if I offended you in the past then I apologise. I don't remember; but I have rather a lot on my plate. And I'm not one of these people who holds on to old grudges, and can instantly name date and place and time. Because life's too f**king short, to be honest. I try to be decent and fair and kindly; sometimes I fall short. Again, I apologise.

Fine. No sweat. I wish all could be cool, too. And it has been - certainly from my side (and yours).

But look above. Christopher Roden has a problem. Doesn't he? It keeps sneaking out.

If it didn't, we wouldn't be having this discussion.

Gary: Christopher is not me. And I'm not him. I suspect it's tempting for people to look on us as 'teh Rodenz', a sort of hive mind, joined at the hip, but we're not. We're two distinct people, not always of the same mind. I suspect Christopher will respond to your points tomorrow; I'll be as interested as anyone else in his replies. Which are not mine.

Context: after what happened with my short story collection it's stating it mildly to suggest that Christopher and I will never be great buddies. But as far as I'm concerned, that was all - as you rightly suggest such things should be - left in the past; we agreed to "no hard feelings" and that was that.

Or so I thought . . . until this.

Holding grudges? Hey, don't look at me. See above.

That's it now. I'll await his reply.

Gary: what happens between Ash-Tree and individual authors is, as far as I'm concerned, private. You've chosen to make it public, and that is, of course, your right. It does make me wonder about who's holding the grudge. But it's where I bow out of the discussion. I don't want to get personal, and it seems you do. So it's best if I just slip quietly away. After reiterating, because I don't know that you quite get it, that I am not Christopher. He does not speak for me, nor I for him. Sorry if that upsets a preconceived notion, but it's the truth.

I've mentioned nothing about Ash-Tree Press, not in all these years. There's a lot to say, but I agreed to let it all go. I'd be deliriously happy if Christopher would keep his snide comments to himself. Peaceful coexistence. But if he can't - and I think this thread demonstrates that he's struggling - then don't expect me to sit here like a puppy and take it.

'Hate' has a pretty simple meaning in my book, and according to my dictionary, but I do apologise if there is a level of irony of which I'm not aware. I certainly appear to have misunderstood what was posted here yesterday.

Much as I'm loth to censor anyone's freedom of speech, I am strongly hoping (ahem, ahem) that the foregoing will be an end of this matter?

And can I have my thread back, please? I don't think Simon had quite finished saying how great I was.

My final comment to Christopher:

Chuck away your dictionary and use real life as your reference point. It was perfectly obvious to anyone that the title header was congratulatory.

But I accept your apology and will say nothing more about it.

Careful: someone might think you want to marry him and bring up all his children, then get slowly tired of the relationship, start eyeing elsewhere, exercise resistance until one evening, at an office party, few too many tequilas slammers and instinct tips over wisdom, you're in the sack with another, and that love, why, it's all gone, dear, not sure you ever really understood me anyway, so let's call it a day, eh, you don't really want the car, do you, well, if you do, I'll have the house, and when the kids come over you'll have to excuse the mess cos, well, she's now left me, too, and I want you back and I'm sorry, I'd not really found myself, can we give it another go, no, no, okay then, that's all, where's the pills, stop rat ye barstard, I'm in the gwutter but wooking at the starbs, now where's rose painkillers, there they are, night-night and -

Although, they could've included Aickman's 'Ringing the Changes' (which I think could be considered a zombie story, however impudent that may seem!), not to mention many others, but then I expect they are concentrating on newer stories and not those which have been collected elsewhere.
