"On 14 July, a Tennessee state law went into effect allowing registered gun holders to carry loaded guns into bars and restaurants."

Lovely.

Tennessee. A beautiful state. A majority of the people who live there, however, have (let's say) a certain romance for frontier justice. To some people, the world is an episode of Gunsmoke. The weird thing is, I'm sure many Tennesseans believe this law actually prevents crime.

Sigh. Now if that was the wild west of the 1800's I'd be carrying a gun. These last few days I feel like I'm still in the 1800's...women whipped and scarred.....

Brings a whole new level of dread into the phrase I demand to see the chef about this burnt crab.

Thing is, it's got to be 'we all have guns or no-one has', hasn't it? I can see how the scary people woul get to the guns first and so it makes sense for the frightened ones to follow. If my scary next door neighbour had one I'd be walking round like Doc Holliday.

This is the same mentality, of course, which leads to gangs of youths carrying knives, etc, to "protect themselves" from rival gangs. The result? Kids getting killed on the streets by other kids. Crazy!

"That don't matter to us. Not the land, not the money, not the woman. I came here to see you, cause I know now you're going to tell me what you're after."

"Only at the point of dying."

"I know."

Sorry, Tony, I didn't mean YOUR mentality specifically - I merely meant that this is the GENERAL mentality which leads to this kind of situation, with gangs, etc. I totally agree with you. And I haven't a clue what the solution to the problem might be.

We all have that animal instinct, I guess it is, to protect ourselves and our families, to fight if needs be. I guess this is a kind of throw-back to that? Not easy to solve at all ...

Well, I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that there weren't very many guns in Tennessee bars and restaurants before this law took effect. The net result of this law is to put guns into situations that in all likelihood never had them before. Now, perhaps, with this law in existence, people will want to take guns to their local bars -- to protect themselves from all the people now allowed to carry guns in bars.

It's all foolishness to me. In an emergency situation, Joe Public with a gun is more likely to shoot an innocent bystander than a criminal. America sure seems to have an affinity for firearms, however. A gun-fan friend of mine once told me (with a straight face) that America's gun laws were the only thing preventing an invasion by another country. (That is, Russia (let's say) would have certainly invaded us by now if they weren't shaking in their boots about the possibility of confronting armed hordes of Gool Ol' Boys.) Well, sure, I thought. It's the gun laws. And our armed forces. And geography. Other than that ...

Texas, I'm told, has a few gun stores with drive-up windows. (?!)

According to Bowling for Columbine certain banks will give you a free gun and ammo as a free gift for opening an account...

I remember that!

However, I believe Moore's stunt was somewhat discredited later -- apparently the bank will indeed give you a gun/ammo, but they won't give it to you in the bank. (I presume they give you a redeemable certificate for a store, or perhaps a gun that will be sent by mail.) As I recall, Moore fudged that fact a bit, made it seem as though the bank will hand you a loaded weapon.

Still. Not a large exaggeration.

That's great for would-be armed bank robbers!

'America's gun laws were the only thing preventing an invasion by another country'.
I was wondering this! I was wondering what would have happened in any war if every country an army invaded all had weaponry.
