Caught a snippet of Charlotte's The Professor on the radio in the middle of the night last week; I'd left it on and woke gradually to hear some fantastic scene, something about life being about 'fitting in the opposites', and despair in life rising every day like the morning light. It sounded fantastic, perhaps because I was half-dreaming. Anyway, I got the book, but am finding the general consensus being that it's a bit shit. Anyone know? And is it really just a warm up for Villette (general consensus being; that this is her best book (but why? Anyone know?))?
As an aside, anyone read Mary Shelley's Last Man?

I enjoyed The Professor - far less ponderous than her own stuff. I believe it was her first novel. Villette and Shirley are the most accomplished. Jane Eyre I can't stand.

Yeah, she wrote it first, then hid it in the cupboard thinking it a bit stinky.
I enjoyed Jane Eyre! But simplistic, yes.
