I see the BBC http://www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice/pressreleases/stories/2009/08_august/17/turn.sh tml are doing a version of Turn of the Screw, to be shown this Christmas.

They've set in in the 1920s, to touch on post-war Britain. I don't hold much hope, even though I'll watch it.

And the other night they did The 39 Steps while ITV did Wuthering Heights. I mean, how many versions of Wuthering Heights do we need? None, Zed will tell you, but I'd personally settle for just a couple. Let's have something else, you non-risk-taking commissioning bleeders!

My thoughts exactly, Sir Fry.

Jane Eyre, perhaps? By the by, does anyone remember what the prequel (set, if I remember rightly, in the Carribean) to this film/book is called? I once saw this on the telly and didn't have a clue it was related to Brontė's book until the end, when it transpired that Rochester's new wife couldn't relate to the cold English climate and went insane.

Is it "The Wide Sargaso Sea"?

Or perhaps it's Ghoulies 2?

'you non-risk-taking commissioning bleeders.' Exactly, and I wish they would keep their hands off one of my favourite books. Gary M loves it too :>)

I just wish people would stop rehashing The Turn of the Screw; A. N. Wilson's 'homage', A Jealous Ghost, was bleedin' awful.

Ghoulies III: Ghoulies go to College was good though, wasn't it?

Yes it was - appallingly dull

Ghoulies III: Ghoulies go to College was good though, wasn't it?

I think we all need Ghoulies now and again

The Wide Sargasso Sea it is! Thanks, Zed. I had no idea this had been written by Jean Rhys.

The best cinematic rendering of "The Turn of the Screw" was "THE INNOCENTS" (aka "SUSPENSE") by Jack Clayton (1961), having Deborah Kerr playing in it. The silent misty apparition of the ghost the pond is a masterpiece of quiet scare. Full stop.

Well, someone may be pleased to learn that Roland Joffe is filming Brighton Rock but updating it to the era of mods and rockers.

Will there ever be another so matching of equals, as "The Turn of the Screw" with THE INNOCENTS?... I mean in terms of high quality: there are plenty matching of equals on the other end.

What else is there - superb written work = superb film?... THE SHINING maybe?... I'm trying not to think of just horror....

There are a few Shakespeares that come close - Polanski's MACBETH and Olivier's RICHARD III/HAMLET, but that seem somehow unequal - except that, well, Shakespeare had to put on his own work, back in the day, too... it's sheer conjecture and a straining of credibility, to say it's never been as good as back when it first ran....

My mind's not firing on all cylindars this morning... hell, I can't even spell "cylandirs"... "cilandyrs"?...

I'm surprised the cast isn't made up of ex-Eastenders actors.

Maybe they could do Wuthering Heights but have them all be aliens. In Africa. Heathcliffe an alien not a gyppo.

Or maybe make some cliched Hollywood blubfest where he's played by Adam Sandler.

With funny rambunctious Disney animals. And Heathcliffe's played by a rascally orange cat.
