Google have now scanned a million or so books, many still copyright protected. They're making them available online shortly. Today is the final day for authors and copyright holders to 'opt out' of the online publication thingy. Yes, you heard me. You've to opt out. Did you know that the UK's Conservative Party has strong links with Google, which is why the Tories are now promising to privatise the electronic patient record system? Just seen Nick Harkaway (John le Carre's writer son) on BBC News 24 saying he's opted out but does wonder if he's made a mistake. Presumably, somehow, there is author payment involved somewhere. | ||

He's right. The whole idea is awful and to put so much in the hands of one company...legislation is not involved etc. As he says - the only positive note is that Sony and Google could screw Amazon a little....tempting. | ||

I simply hate the idea that they have taken books, digitized them, (without consent, at first, by the way), in effect stealing the works to commercialize on them, forcing authors and publishers to "opt-in" or "opt-out." The monies will be nominal, I'm sure. Goddam thieves! I've opted out, needless to say. I'd opt out on principle, no matter the money involved. It can't be legal for Google to do this without buying the rights from authors first, surely? So I don't see how this opt-out thing works. I would have thought they'd be legally obliged to ask authors first whether they were happy for their work to be digitised like this. But maybe I'm wrong? I hope not - I'd like to see some big name author take Google to court (and win!) on this. | ||

This whole thing is confusing to me. Are the books going to be offered for free?... Is it to simply store them for reasons of preservation?.. What seems to (? - I can't quite grasp the nature of this project) enrage ME, is the utter monopolistic hypocrisy of the whole thing: If I wanted to go out tomorrow, and "preserve" all the crumbling lost ghost literature in my OWN database and call it Ghostbooks.com, say, I COULDN'T?! Because only google can do whatever it wants, and I can't do what I want? And lawyers would sue me if I tried?... Maybe I'm all mixed-up about the basics of this, but it also seems to be the first tentative toe-dipping step into the lake of control of the internet.... | ||

Dying - I just remember checking how much discount was demanded on small press books when my publisher was in hospital. Gardners/Amazon 57%? - can't rem now. Terrible - nothing for anyone except Amazon. | ||

I tried looking up The Modern Weird Tale by Joshi. 20 or so pages in there with the permission of the publisher. Then H.P.Lovecraft's Book of the Supernatural by S.Jones and Randy Becker - quite a lot online (presumably with permission) and it gives a side bar where you can get copies and the cost. Overviews for Stephen King - no previews. Same for Joe Lansdale. | ||

Google says of the former - extract by permission of McFarland, the publisher - but the latter just says published by Pegasus Books and copyright next to it. | ||

Actually the wonderful Forbidden Fruit website has a story of mine too. I sent it to them. That was before I realised that the Internet is a latrine. I just thought it was a lot of cubicles and you could write on the walls. I often like people's nice little websites and e-zines, be they fit or lame. They're the corner shops of the online economy. I hate corporate online capitalism and its mechanical rape and exploitation, allied to the destruction of book publishing and bookselling. | ||

Is it going to be like bit-torrent sites, you can rapidly download whole libraries of books?... It'll never catch on, if so, people want to read hard-copies, not screens, will never change. Does anyone have a problem with the clear copyright violation of bit-torrent sites?... There are, for example, rare movies on these sites, that one will NEVER get to see, unless one was, let's say... "morally-flexible" enough, to download them. A movie sitting in the studio vaults... no intention of ever releasing it back to the public... you don't want to re-sell it, you just want to view it... what's wrong with downloading and seeing it?... | ||

Some companies seem to have agreed to a partnership with google. Other entries - for example The Duma Key show a couple of word snippet - The Shining a sentence overview. Nothing from the scripts. | ||

There's a few sites, easy to find, that make downloading movies from youtube as easy as pie, and totally free - you can put them on an iPod and watch it at your own leisure. I see nothing wrong with this... I have no intention of doing anything except watching these on a TV or the iPod... it's no different than me sitting in front of a computer watching them.... I found the hard-to-find Hal Ashby flick THE LANDLORD there on youtube, complete (in parts)... and Fritz Lang's SECRETS BEYOND THE DOOR... movies I've been wanting to see for a while... nothing wrong in a little creative maneuvering, I say.... |
