I had this in my inbox today: Sarah Gray sells Wuthering Heights mash-up to Kensington The classic and gruesome mash-ups continue. Now comes word that Sarah Gray has sold Wuthering Bites to John Scognamiglio at Kensington Books for a high five-figures advance, via agent Evan Marshall. The book is to be "a retelling of Wuthering Heights in which Heathcliff is a vampire." Jezuz H. Christ... *cries* I mean, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is a one-joke novel. Then there was the one with the sea monsters, and now this. And why the 'high-five-figure advance' at a time when writers of original fiction struggle for mass market publication let alone advances? No offence to Ms Gray at all - perhaps the book is a good one - but I despair when I read publishing news like this... Also, it's so tawdry when one goes on Amazon & sees the writers of such books listed as co-authors with recognised literary greats like Jane Austen. | ||

The bright side is that anyone who is economically right-wing, who believes in free-market economics, now has no right to complain about bad books and worse films. The market has spoken. They've got what they wanted. | ||

Bad writing like bad filmmaking or bad Art in general only needs to be ignored for it to cease to exist. If I didn't practice that strategy I'd have gone insane years ago... | ||

This thing has really vexed me as well - but only because I wish I'd a thought a this first! And by the time I come around to being able to, all the best novels will be taken, I'm sure. I'll be stuck with BARCHESTER TOWERS AND THE IRKSOME FUNGUS, or ALTON LOCKE VS. THE LEPRECHAUNS. | ||
