Anyone remember this? I used to really want to buy it, but only used to see it in dentist waiting rooms. I got the special that was out the other week at Smiths and it was great, not all soft or whatever. Oh, I dunno; I just like that girly, ghostly flavour. http://mistycomic.co.uk/Home.html |

I remember it well Tony but didn't read it as it was perceived as a girls only comic. Instead I used to read the rather violent (for its time) boys comic 'Action'. It was so controversial it made the tabloid headlines and several 70's current affairs shows ran stories on how this nasty little boys comic was corrupting the UK youth. It was the UK's version of the 50's EC comics scandal in America. Just like the EC horror/crime comics, Action was banned after just 36 weekly issues. Read all about it here. As well as every page of every issue. http://www.sevenpennynightmare.co.uk/ |

"Action" was tremendous. One of my mates back then had a huge Hookjaw poster on his wall - incredibly graphic, it was. |

An omnibus edition of Action's sister comic Battle was published recently. Violent wartime action with Johnny Red, The Rat Pack, Charley's War etc. I might have to buy a copy. |

Just about every story in Action (which I bought eagerly every week as it came out) was based on some film or other: Jaws, The Godfather, Dirty Harry, Rollerball... many others, I bet (can't remember after all these years). I think I still have a stash of Actions up in my Gran's attic... Zed, I remember a certain picture from Hookjaw that was extremely graphic - soon after that issue the comic was banned! Here's one:http://www.mpd57.co.uk/Blaggers/Hookjaw-001.jpg |

Battle and Warlord...yep. Loved 'em. Huw - good God, that was the exact poster my mate had on his wall. I coveted it for years. Thank you for bringing back to me a wonderful memory. |

And there was me thinking Tony had developed a retro fondness for classic jazz songs... |

I remember winning a prize from Warlord for a letter I sent in detailing a war story my Granddad told me... I think I was a Warlord Secret Agent too. |

Glad to be of service, Gary! I was looking for the gruesome scene I remembered reading in Hookjaw (it was Red McNally's death scene) but came across that poster instead. The Action history and related info that Sean linked to is really interesting too. |

Jeez - I must have bought every issue! I remember every frame, and actually got upset at certain times, such as when Mason got killed. I stopped buying it after that I felt so betrayed. And you know what? I think the mag was sleazy and foul. I loved it, but did feel dirty reading it - especially when a BOY was shown being slowly torn to pieces (Wilbur, who I hated). I hated the mag for giving me the horn over gore, basically. 'Fondest' memory of the comic? Me on the bus home asking my mum what 'Disembowellment' meant. |

'Action' & '2000 AD' are imprinted on my mind for all time. Like you Tony I can remember every panel vividly and the sense of excitement every Thursday when the next issue was due in the shops. Hookjaw & Flesh (remember Old One Eye) were absolutely wonderful entertainment for boys and the gorier and more un-PC the better imho. I would dearly love a graphic novel edition of both stories in full colour. The death of "massa Rick" sent shockwaves through my circle of friends at the time, right Sean. I can still see his severed head sinking into the depths and remember the welter of emotions it stirred. But at least he left his mark on Hookjaw by gouging out one of its eye. What was it you called the evil millionaire who owned the island resort again? We seemed to wait an eternity for him to get his comeuppance but boy was it worth it. Ah, memories... |
