Oh, the jet-lag... But I really can't complain, as the flights were all fairly smooth - for a change. (Frank, you have nothing to worry about. Probably.) The landlord kept me company on the way to the States with Creatures of the Pool - a very effective and unsettling vision of Liverpool! Chapter 24 in particular needed following with one of Lord P's lighter tales before I could sleep. I also passed the time writing my Jack the Ripper story for the Whitechapel short story competition. A giallo called "From Hell to Eternity". Then Lord P and Joel Lane entertained me on the way back yesterday. (Or was it the day before?) The Brit-witty paranormal duo of Against the Darkness was the perfect counterpoint to the bleak beauty of Joel's Lost District. I'd read a couple of stories from one until I felt I needed a dose of the other. An odd pair to read in tandem, certainly, but it kept me in balance. I had Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed on my laptop, but my bag got trapped behind others in the overhead bin (bloody inconsiderate people), so when I wasn't reading, I was listening to my MP3 player. Land of the Lost was showing on the plane and the guy beside me was watching Journey to the Centre of the Earth on HIS laptop, both of which I imagine were vastly improved by my seeing them without dialogue and set to the soundtracks from Creepshow, The Howling and Dead Ringers. Alas, I was unable to find a glass-encased spider in the States, though I did try. The shop I had in mind was no longer there. Sorry, Ramsey! And now to that most tedious of post-trip chores: unpacking. Ugh. Though some of my Stateside acquisitions can simply go straight back into the suitcase, as I'm off again on Friday to spend a fortnight in far more delightful company than my parents'. |

"From Hell to Eternity". That's a great title, Kate. I hope one of us wins the competition. |
