Sourgrapes'r'us.com is at it again, this time whining about Tartarus press winning an award. Reading back over all the blogs on the site there's only one writer/publisher they've mentioned in a positive light...

I wonder who that might be.

You will not be surprised to learn that someone we won't name had a difference with Ray Russell years ago.

I was amused to see that the poster had to misquote the Guardian comment about Wharton and Wells in order to make his spurious point. He hasn't changed.

Hey, my name just appeared on that sad little site. Someone's posted a fake comment under my name.

I've posted a reply which I doubt they will ever approve being the cowards that they are, so here is my response

The REAL WEBER
Judging by the usual "Mummy mummy, his is bigger than mine" tone of desperation that pervades this den of mediocrity it was safe to assume that you were attempting to satirize an existing award granted to another publisher who is doing better than you.

As for avid reader of this blog, I hardly think that a cursory glance every now and then to see which respected writers whose boots you are not worthy to lick the shit from the soles of you're trying to denigrate today counts as avid readership.

You claim to not be politicking but you clearly are, as only certain people face any criticism on this blog. If you were truly an antidote to the politicking then there might actually be some point to this site.

I very much doubt this comment will be displayed here as you are too much of a coward to face any criticism, instead preferring to sit at your sad and lonely little desk, spewing your anonymous bile and venom across the net in a pathetic attempt at self-aggrandisement.

One looks forward to the day when one is doing so well that others hate me for my superiority.

I hear it's lonely at the top, Ramsey. Any truth to that, or do you feel our love?

Not the Ray Russell!

Author of the quite superb 'Sardonicus' (1960) - 4th Pan Horror (1962)!!

I remember seeing the barking mad and strangely enjoyable film of that too by William Castle (1961).

I feel a bit left out of this discusion since I haven't a clue who you're all talking about. Or is this the same person who was ranting about Ally's award, and everything else for that matter? I'd completely forgotten about him! Is he still blogging? I thought that was just a one-off!

After a good night's sleep I do feel I need to apologise to Mr Barker for suggesting he was was showiing sour grapes over another small press receiving an award.

It's clear that his green eyed drooling envy is obviously down to the fact that the small press received a good review in a newspaper and had the sheer temerity to (gasp shock horror) post the good review on his small press' website. Fuck me what an evil twat that guy at tartarus must be! ACTUALLY POSTING A GOOD REVIEW OF HIS PRESS ON HIS OWN SITE!!!! What a cunt. He really deserved a column slating him for getting a good review. Well done Mr Barker, you showed him.

You couldn't make Mr Horrorwatch up, could you? I see he's now suggesting that discussion of his comments is disproportionate in terms of world events, whereas his own comments aren't. I do think the world might be a duller place without him.

Surely this guy, if he's a writer himself, is just shooting himself in the foot? I mean, if he wants to find a publisher, but he's slagged off all the likely contenders, well then they're highly unlikely to want to publish him, are they? I just can't figure his motivation for all this.

He runs a small press of his own - assuming that we're right on his not so secret identity - which when you consider that there is a plug for a Chris Barker story on that blog there somewhere is a safe bet - so he'll always find at least one person who'll publish his work.

As Zed once said, I wonder how hard Chris Barker the writer needs to work to meet the stringent standards of Chris Barker the publisher.

I do wonder whether Mr Watch genuinely believed "Errol Undercliffe" was me or simply used the posting as an excuse to revive his same old tired rant (which, curiously, he toned down very considerably on Tom Ligotti's discussion board, where he appears to be straining to stay on his best behaviour).

Possibly the best tack is just to avoid this nasty little sore of a site? No-one is going to give the slightest credence to anything the person responsible says- and does anyone read it other than the members of this board?

I wish in vain that CB would instead focus his energy again on publishing, he had a promising start with the two Reggie Oliver books.

Zed - do you mean the writing, the story, the plot or the characterization, or all of it? I mean if it's the story I say there's room for all types of fiction. I'm not defending him for his 'accomplishments' outside of writing, just pointing out that we can dislike a writer, but can also like/admire their work regardless. Can't we?
