Anyone read the novel? The forthcoming movie sounds very interesting. But will it be a horror or a thriller? None of the 'new movie' websites seem totally sure.

I read the book and loved it - the film trailer looks more horror than thriller, but that may just be the way it's cut. I think there's been mention elsewhere on here regarding the book and film.

I wasn't overly impressed with the book. Whether the film will be any good remains to be seen. I think I saw somewhere that at least parts of the film will lean towards horror -- no supernatural elements in the book but taking place in an asylum there's scope for creeping paranoia as well as scary hallunication scenes.

Having now seen the official trailer on Youtube, it looks strongly like a horror.

That could just be the way they're trying to sell it. But I must say I'm pleased that someone of Scorsese's calibre is doing a spooky movie. That can only be good for the genre.

Paul, it might benefit the film if it does focus on the supernatural/psychological aspect. I enjoyed the book, but I doubt the film will do it justice, even by Scorsese. Without going into spolier terrority, the plot hangs on a pretty major twist, which might seem flimsy in retrospect. But I really hope they pull it off. I read the novel after seeing the trailer, earlier in the year. It's worth a read.

It's Lehane's weakest book, I reckon. An interesting change in direction, very well written, but ultimately a tired old plot you'll realise the ending of long before you get there.
