For a bit of idle amusement, my young son, Harry, and I have recently been compiling a list of all the best (i.e. most hair-raising, horrific atmospheric or frankly drop-dead frightening) scenes in horror movies, with a view to maybe making a compilation DVD at some point (purely for non-commercial purposes, of course). We've already come up with quite a few. For example, the pounding on the bedroom door in the original version of THE HAUNTING, the vampire crawling along the narrow pipe to get to the person in the next cell, breaking its shoulders and hips in the process, in the remake of SALEM'S LOT, the old hag in the child's communion dress in THE OTHERS, the killing of the nursery teacher in THE BROOD, Hoptoad's ritual burning of Orsini in THE MASQUE OF THE RED DEATH, etc. We have quite a few others too, but we're always on the lookout for more. Anyone got any fave movie moments they fancy nominating? Just for a bit of fun, of course. |

What a great idea for a thread! Good choices there, Paul. Here's some of mine, off the top of my head: The spider-head thing in THE THING. The ghost in the lake in THE INNOCENTS The head-spinning in THE EXORCIST The meat-licking scene in the original THE EYE The ending of THE BLAIR WITH PROJECT The lights going out in the tunnels and the closing voiceover in SESSION 9 The hands through the bannister in THE BROOD The man in the lift in JUON: THE GRUDGE The last 10 minutes of REC The grinning statue in Blatty's EXORCIST III I'll probably think of a million more in a minute... |

I remember being in a pub in Sunderland many years ago where on the big screen they played iconic moments from horror films on a continuous loop. Great, it was. |

Here are some that really jolted me: the first unexpected glimpse of the creatures in THE DESCENT Sadako crawling out of the well, then out of the TV in RINGU the spider-walk in THE EXORCIST the nurse station scene in EXORCIST III Michael Myers' mask appearing in the shadows behind Laurie in HALLOWEEN Killer Bob crawling across the table towards Maddy in TWIN PEAKS the derelict house sequence in BLAIR WITCH PROJECT just about every frame of THEM/ILS (2006) ----- and not jolting, exactly, but deeply chilling: the last line of SESSION 9 |

Bloody hell, you guys! This is awesome stuff. Here are a couple more (apologies in case someone's already mentioned them). The two hunters in the derelict church, seeing one of the deformed twins gazing down at them through a skylight in JUST BEFORE DAWN. The monstrous cyclist pursuing the terrified girl past the gallows in the first episode of MURDER ROOMS. Dracula's brides attacking the circle of communion wafers, and when they can't get through, slaughtering all the horses, in BRAM STOKER'S DRACULA. How about the scene in the confessional in EXORCIST III, when the priest gradually realises that he's speaking to a serial killer? This list could go on forever. |

The moment with the camera situated behind Danny as he's staring along the hallway at the little girls is possibly the best composed shot in cinema history for me. Uttery, utterly pant-shittingly terrifying. |

I can't really add to any of the above - many of the more recent ones I haven't seen anyway, but if any older ones pop into my head I'll let you know. But thanks, Steve, for clearing up a mystery for me. I remember this scene vividly, but could never remember which film it came from: >> "My God...who was holding my hand?" - The Haunting. << Oooo, just thought of one, towards the end of the ventriloquist's dummy story in Dead of Night (original) when the dummy is closing in on him in the cell. |

I agree with all the Exorcist III moments - for a flawed film it has way more than its fair share of bonechilling scenes. My favourite is the nurse-station. Off the top of my head: Texas Chainsaw Massacre - The dinner table scene where Sally screams and begs as the family prod her, pulling faces and giggling. Event Horizon - The first video glimpse of the vanished crew; bloodstreaked, coupling and shrieking. The Evil Dead - The girl's changing voice, from normal to demon. Se7en - The sloth victim comes to life. Twin Peaks - Bob in Laura's bedroom. Suspiria - The entire opening scene. |

So many good ones have been mentioned already, but here are some that may not have come up yet: - the girl rising from the lake in Let's Scare Jessica to Death - the dead woman in the 'Drip of Water' (?) segment in Black Sabbath - the underground swim in Inferno - the 'wavy' ghost in Kairo - the ghost ship and its crewmen appearing in Carpenter's The Fog - the ending of Quatermass and the Pit, and the church scene - the Templars riding in Ossorio's Blind Dead films - the count rising on the ship in Nosferatu - the opening scene in Herzog's Nosferatu - the night walk through the plantation in I Walked with a Zombie - the demon-masked woman coming through the reeds in Onibaba - Mitsuko visiting the school in Nakata's Dark Water - the witch/coffin scenes and finale of Viy - the face in the window in Carnival of Souls - some of the night time scenes in Paranormal Activity - the crawling apparition and the thing under the sink in A Tale of Two Sisters - too many scenes to mention in Night of the Demon |

Keep 'em coming. I'm scribbling notes furiously (it beats working, after all). How about ... The first investigation of the interior of the shack in WRONG TURN. The corpse pursuing John Cussack through the ventilation shafts in 1408. The bizarre nurses in SILENT HILL. The spider in the mouth scene in TRAUMA. And for sheer unadulterated atmosphere of evil, the opening scene - the statue of Bazuzu, the blood-red sunset and the dogs going crazy as they attack each other - in THE EXORCIST. |

I love many of the scenes mentioned, but I'd like to add: The scene with the ringing phone and the body in a bag in AUDITION. The out-of-nowhere old woman in HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL. (She appears when the protagonists are looking for a hidden door, as I recall.) The out-of-nowhere old man in a diaper in THE SENTINEL. The dwarf in DON'T LOOK NOW The clown doll in THE GAME Draining the pool in DIABOLIQUE The ball bouncing down the stairs in THE CHANGELING The masked figure in THE ORPHANAGE "Is it safe?": MARATHON MAN The dummy in DEAD OF NIGHT. For that matter, in MAGIC, as well. The birth in THE BROOD The suicide in CACHE The fishook-eating sequence in THE ISLE The baby in ERASERHEAD |

Fr Karras seeing a vision of his mother in place of Regan on the bed in 'The Exorcist'. The man appearing outside the phone booth in 'Rosemary's Baby'. The killer revealed in the final bloody scenes of 'Tenebrae'. The hideous old woman rising from the bath in 'The Shining'. Dana Andrews pursued through the woods in 'Night Of The Demon'. The final shock scene in 'Don't Look Now'. The head rolling out of the bottom of the boat in 'Jaws'. Robert De Niro revealing his true identity with a chilly "you belong to me" at the end of 'Angel Heart'. The final shot of 'Psycho' with that look on Norman's face. The always gut-wrenching finale of 'The Wicker Man' which has me screaming for him to escape every time. The lift scene in Romero's 'Dawn Of The Dead'. The chase through the London Underground in 'An American Werewolf In London'. The discovery of the eyeless corpse in 'The Birds' and the look on her face as she staggers out of the cottage. The weird clockwork doll dancing into the room in 'Profondo Rosso'. The first attack and that terrifying banging noise in 'The Entity'. The discovery of the emaciated sloth victim tied to the bed in 'Seven'. The realisation that the skeletal father propped in the chair is still alive in 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre'. The discovery of the jackal's corpse in the graveyard in 'The Omen'. The sudden turning around of the first possessed victim in 'The Evil Dead' with those eyes and that voice. The vampire rising straight as a board from the hold of the ship in 'Nosferatu'. The briefly glimpsed claw under the floorboards in 'Blood On Satan's Claw'. The rising of the baby thing from its crib at the climax of 'Eraserhead'. The rotting zombie leaping of the wall and grabbing the boy in 'City Of The Living Dead'. ...I could be here all night! |

Alexicon: The Brood is also a Cronenberg film, arguably his best ever. Seek it out, you won't be disappointed. The sense of dread pervading this is really unparalleled. The acting is top-notch, with an impressive (as always) Oliver Reed as a psychiatrist with unconventional methods and Samatha Eggar as his most scary patient. Their performances are truly intense. |

Oh, yes, Barlow entering the prison cell in SALEM'S LOT! Silence, slender fingers whispering over the lock and then... That's one of my all time favourite leap-out-of-the-skin scares. |

The weird bundle smashing through the Glick's kitchen window to lie still on the floor. Then it slowly rises up to full height and reveals itself to be Mr Barlow before promptly dispatching Danny Glick's parents by mercilessly smashing their skulls together! Veronica Cartwright convinced that Donald Sutherland is putting on a rather good 'pod person' impersonation before he slowly points and lets out that terrifying, inhuman, 'come and get her' screeeeech! |

For me it's Videodrome, but The Brood, Scanners and a couple of others aren't far behind! Yeah, ask me tomorrow (today!) and I'll say VIDEODROME is his best. Cronenberg's early stuff is actually completely brilliant. Yeah, he's good now, but back then he was just sensational. Those films remain a horror benchmark for me. Anyway: The man-faced dog in the first remake of INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS. The satanic pelican in the water in THE SECT (no, really). The terrifying dream sequence at the start of WILD STRAWBERRIES. The dead woman speaking in CRIES AND WHISPERS. The sea cow moving up the beach in LONG WEEKEND. The bandstand scene in THE DEAD ZONE (it's always terrified me). The entire running time of BLACK WATER - the scariest, most tense film of the last few years. |

BLACK WATER was made first, I think. It's brilliant: three people in a boat in the Aus swamp. Boat gets attacked by croc. People climb up tree. The rest of the film is a masterclass in tension. ROGUE disn't impress me much - very Hollywood. BLACK WATER: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0816436/ |

Has anyone mentioned the lift sequence in the original version of THE EYE? I honestly thought that was one of the most frightening scenes in any move ever. The device of watching the lift ascending via the console, with painful slowness, and all the time this nightmarish figure standing behind the heroine is slowly turning around ... woa, talk about making your hair prickle. I'd also like to nominate the walk around the skyscraper ledge in THE LEDGE section of CAT'S EYE. If memory serves, the original short story of THE LEDGE was also extremely tense. |

'Has anyone mentioned the lift sequence in the original version of THE EYE?' The best moment in the film- Videodrome, then Deadringers are my fav Cronenberg pictures. I would also add the thrashing inverted torsos in the Thing, an image that sort of cropped up again in the Silent Hill universe, years later. The image of the black Dhalia is also unforgettable, though not fond of the Elroy based picture. |

And that scene mentioned above, from the Exorcist III, the long shot before the nurse appears with the scissors is extraordinary. |

The interrogation scenes with Brad Dourif in E3. The Hitcher when Rutger Hauer says so matter-of-factly that the man in the car at the side of the road won't have gone far because "I cut his legs off". |

Paul, SK's story 'The Ledge' was completely ripped off from 'Contents Of The Dead Man's Pocket' (1957) by Jack Finney (yes, him!) - which is even more tense as well as extremely poignant. |

It's official: this thread is my crackpipe. I want to spend the weekend watching all these scenes. I'll also add: - John Klein's phone conversation with Indrid Cold in The Mothman Prophecies -the black-hooded monk approaching the reverend at the climax of the BBC's The Treasure of Abbot Thomas |

I think The Eye (original, 2002) has several effective scenes (including the elevator scene, the hanging pork licking scene, the "you're in my seat!" scene, etc.) but my favourite one is where Mun wanders the hospital corridors after she has just had her operation, catching sight of a strange figure leading dying patients away. The use of sound is very effective here. Richard, I second your Mothman nomination. It's nice to see Silent Hill getting some mentions - despite its faults, it has some terrific scenes. Thinking about it makes me want to revisit the games and face (or run screaming from, more likely) Pyramid Head. There are some incredibly atmospheric scenes in the SH games, and also in the Fatal Frame series, which is beautifully scary in places. |

"Paul, SK's story 'The Ledge' was completely ripped off from 'Contents Of The Dead Man's Pocket' (1957) by Jack Finney (yes, him!) - which is even more tense as well as extremely poignant." Steve, I know the Jack Finney story well. Thankfully I've got both that and THE LEDGE in my collection. As JF wrote his masterpiece before SK, he certainly gets the vote for originality. I mention the King tale because of the tie-in with that terrifically frightening scene in the movie. |

Re one of Stephen's suggestions: "The long drawn out rape and murder in the office sequence in 'Frenzy'." I actually found that one of the most cringe-worthy, badly acted scenes in any film I've seen. I'm afraid it just made me laugh it was so bad! What one individual finds scary in a film another might not, I guess? |

Weird but I find that scene almost unbearable to watch because of the very matter-of-fact build-up and the sheer brilliance of the acting. The effect the first time I saw 'Frenzy' with no idea what to expect was almost traumatising in its intensity. Hitchcock was really pushing the envelope there! |

I guess we're talking the difference between scenes that scare us and those that horrify us. 'Antichrist' achieves both with the creepy as hell animal scenes (especially that fox) and the infamous mutilation scenes. To highlight the difference must have been Lars von Trier's intention and I know which scenes have haunted me more. |
