The single most horrifying news story I've read all year....

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/worldnews/article-1230092/Patient-trapped-23-yea r-coma-conscious-along.html

(what was that Leiber novel where the punishment exacted to political dissidents was one year consciousness in a totally comatose body?... gulp....)

I was just about to post a link to that story myself, saying the same as you, Craig - that this is the most horrifying situation for the guy. Imagine being in a state like that for 23 years with no way of telling people you're really alive/conscious? It's terrifying.

But also oddly heartening that the guy managed to maintain his sanity through the power of the imagination.
I find that the most incredible aspect of the whole story!

But we don't really exist. We're just figments of his imagination, saying these things to keep him happy until someone realises he's conscious and tries to wake him up.

It's not quite like JOHNNY GOT HIS GUN, is it? Because this guy could hear, so he must have used sounds to entertain himself for all these years - or, wait, did that guy hear too? They say senses are heightened, so one wonders if he wasn't able to concoct a soundscape world unlike any we can conceive of, to stay sane - and one wonders how his dreams were, perhaps the dreamworld was heaven, and reality was hell.

Is science so good, to preserve someone like this? Ask the most merciful of men from any century, and I'd bet they'd all say, mercy surely dictates....

Was it GATHER, DARKNESS?
