Which classic movies have actually benefited from extra or restored footage being added for those special, directors, new, never before seen, final, restored, ultimate editions ?
I nominate 'Apocalypse Now Redux' with 50 additional minutes added to the cinema release. This mainly comprises 2 great restored scenes. The first of Willard's team hooking up with the Playmates whilst they are holed up in a rain drenched muddy riverside fuel dump awaiting extraction and the other set in an old French colonial plantation house. This epic movie still rewards a yearly viewing.

I couldn't believe that the scene with the crashed helicopter in the river (with the bird cages and the dead bodies of the dancers) was cut from Apocalypse Now- also the Frenchmen in the jungle, but again, the film would have been four hours long, but I had no problem with the longer cut, loved it actually, also the restored colours- so that version was definatly worth re-issuing. I wasn't particularly fond of the shorter Alien cut, despite the added scenes. Lingering dread just worked better.

I'd watch a four-hour version of Apocalypse Now. Oh, yes. The best war film ever made, IMHO.

I'd love to see a fully restored version of THE SHINING - i.e. the version that made it once onto British TV in the late 80s.

Some of the scenes included in that version but now usually missing include: Mrs. Torrance being interviewed by a child psychologist about Danny and revealing the extent of Jack's uncontrollable rages (suggesting rather strongly that he was a bad egg long before he ever got to The Overlook), and an unforgettable moment near the end when the troubled wifey stumbles into the hotel lounge, only to find it filled with the skeletons and rotting corpses of those guests who'd frozen to death in the 1900s.

I'm not sure who ordered these scenes (and others) removed, but according to my info something like an outrageous 15-20 mins eventually hit the cutting-room floor. Rather worryingly, I heard a rumour that this full length version of THE SHINING no longer exists anywhere, which would be a sad loss indeed.

Paul, there is an extended cut of THE SHINING (as part of the Kubrick box set; the UK extended versionaparrently), but I don't think that last shot you mention is included.

I'll have to watch it again no just to check...

Regarding 'The Shining', I only have his daughter's amazing docmentary in the boxed UK set, not the extended version. It would be amazing to see those scenes that Paul mentions. I think the first cut of Apocalypse Now BTW was over five hours, but that was the first assembly. Has anyone seen the documentary on the making of the film- 'Hearts of Darkness'?- It's basically a documentary on how NOT to make a film.

Actually, yes, the box set one isn't the extended version - but my Region1 disc is.

Paul - the recently remastered Kubrik DVDs includes the restored cut of THE SHINING. These screenshots are taken from my R1 DVD, although I'm reasonably sure the R2 remastered release was also restored:-

I'll take that back and apologies to Zed. I've just looked up the R2 release on Play and it says "Please note: This is the UK theatrical cut with a run time of 115 minutes", so you do need to get the R1 version to get the full 144 minutes (even though IMDB says that 144 minutes is the cut US release, and in uncut form runs to 146 minutes).

Didn't the death of Scatman Crothers get terribly (pun intended) cut? I've read a description of what it was originally shot as, and it was much longer and more brutal....

Ah, this is were I read it....

http://filmbabble.blogspot.com/2007/08/10-rarely-seen-deleted-scenes-not-on.html

Quote: "Halloran's (Scatman Crothers) death scene as filmed is not the one we actually see. The one filmed depicts a much longer, much more graphic death. In its entirety, the scene lasts almost seventy seconds, and is full of gore. Rather then just run up and hit him as seen in the released version, Jack (Jack Nicholson) runs up, hits him in the back of the head. Halloran screams. Jack pulls the ax back, and then slams the spike on the back of the ax into the base of Halloran's spine. Halloran screams and recoils, and then Jack slams the ax into his back and he falls down. Halloran rolls onto his back and is looking up, and Jack starts to beat him with the ax before he "hears" something and leaves.”

It goes on to say a special edition DVD released 10/23/07 might have it on it... does it?...

There's also a scene (apparently lost) where the hotel manager visits Wendy and Danny in hospital and remarks that at least they've survived (which suggests an echo of the Donner Pass dialogue early on). It came between the shot of Jack freezing in the maze and the cut to his frozen corpse.

Waiting for 'Apocalypse Now Redux' to be rereleased on the big screen. The only way to see that movie.

Best war film of all time?
Between it and 'The Deerhunter' for me (probably).

My choice for the best war film comes down to a list of two:

Apocalypse Now
Come and See

I agree Zed. I have Elem Klimov's 'Come and See' (1985) on remastered DVD and always described it to friends as 'Apocalypse Now' set in Belorussia during WW2... to the power of 10 ! A haunting, powerful, surreal nightmare of a movie. The climax set in the village defies belief.
