There is more money being spent on breast implants and Viagra today than on Alzheimer's research. This means that by 2040, there should be a large elderly population with perky boobs and huge erections and absolutely no recollection of what to do with them. |

There's a terrifying Tony Richards story (in his collection GOING BACK) about a future where cosmetic surgery is so much the norm that a young woman with an uncorrected dimple is mocked, abused and socially outcast. And that's just the start... |

Then there's REPO: THE GENETIC OPERA, where surgery is somewhere between fashion and fetish and your organs can be repossessed if you miss a payment. |

And, of course, there's the JLP story about the man who wants a penis enlargment... (Weber, that joke was rubbish. And older than me. I'm sure I heard Jim Davidson tell it when I was about 11.) |

I'm not sure if I should have laughed at your first and second posts, Weber, but I'm afraid they DID make me laugh. There are some serious points here though. First, why on earth do people want cosmetic surgery? I read a report online yesterday about a former Miss Argentina who died because of some botched job to give her a better bottom. Crazy! Secondly, and more importantly - after all, people CHOOSE cosmetic surgery, why on earth is more money being spent on this than on Alzheimer's research? That's just criminal. |

Why do some surgeons spend all those years of training only to take the Hippocratic oath and then dedicate their careers to pampering the insecurities of the wealthy? Because that's the kind of world we live in... there's a great old Robert Donat movie about this called 'The Citadel' (1938) which rings more true today than ever <sigh>. |

I understand that psychic cosmetic surgery is now being offered in the Phillipines. Might be be worth a punt for those of you who believe you need a makeover. |

I see nothing wrong with cosmetic surgery - if someone is compelled to improve themselves via surgery, why not? The risk is there of death on the operating table, and they should be okay with the risk. But there's nothing wrong with cosmetically enhancing one's self. What's the difference between that, and say, exercising to improve tone? That's "unnatural" too, one could argue - it's brutal to the body, it's torturous, forcing one to do a series of heavy weight-lifting, running until one is breathless, pulling the muscles this way and that, causing great physical pain, all for a result that is "unnatural" to the body - I don't see the difference.... |

Exercise is entirely natural to the human body -we are(were) hunter gatherers by nature and not being able to run a mile would have led to an early death at one stage of human existance. The sedentary lifestyle we have now is natural only to molluscs. |

I just read recently that a former Miss Argentina died during plastic surgery performed on her buttocks. She was a mother of two young girls- twins. And her career in the beauty pageant world, or whatever you call it, was long over I think. |

If there were a pill that a man could swallow and it would instantly add any desired amount of inches to his manhood, that pill would be purchased by every man on the planet, and by every woman just in case the man didn't pick it up yet, including every person that disavows cosmetic surgery, and doubly including those who disavow it because it's "unnatural." The end. |

There was an episode of "Sex and the City" where Samantha and her boyfriend went to couples counselling. After much agonising over how to answer the "What's wrong?" question, Samantha finally blurted out that he was just too small. The boyfriend countered with, "Did you ever think that maybe your vagina is too big?" |

Craig, I think we'd all make different decisions if magic worked. Pills don't simply achieve gross body changes with no other effects. Viagra is intended as a prescribed treatment for genuine erectile dysfunction; men who use it to achieve erections when drunk, on demand or shortly after sex are abusing it. Its common side-effects include loss of sensation, headaches, high blood pressure, dizziness, nausea and insomnia. Drugs are not 'magic bullets', and only an idiot would give their partner a non-prescribed drug because they liked the primary changes it produced. |

I understand what you're saying, Joel, that there are no "magic" pills in this world - I was more trying to probe the motivations and secret desires of men (and women) and I tend to think, unleashed, we are different creatures. A truly self-satisfied man wouldn't need such a pill, hence Ramsey's answer. If I could snap my fingers, a person could appear before me I was very attracted to, I could do whatever I want with them for one hour, and then snap my fingers and they're gone forever with no evidence left behind for anyone to figure out... would I indulge? Very likely, to be honest. If I could snap my fingers (crossing threads slightly) and inflict horrific suffering on a small child, then snap my fingers and the event never happened, I would not take that opportunity - so there are limits to our desires, there are certain humane (thank God!) borders to our humanity. But how much of us are penned animals, life-long penned animals, we never even know we're these life-long penned animals? Cosmetic surgery unleashes the vanity within us - it seems to prove there is tangible vanity in the human psyche. Viagra and its amazing success prove - facetiously - that Harlan Ellison was right, "Love ain't nothing but sex misspelled".... |
