I emailed ITV yesterday to ask when they're planning on showing Dexter series 3. They replied today saying they have no plans to show it.

The soapytitwanking bastards. I wonder if the code of Harry can be circumvented in the case of ITV execs?

You know I've never seen 'Dexter' but everyone keeps telling me I'd love it.

It is black comedy horror isn't it? One of my favourite genres (if not favourite).

I'm the same as you, Stephen - never seen it. Someone on the Pantechnicon board reckoned it would be just my cup of tea, but I read what it was about and thought "That sounds awful". Is it meant to be black comedy then? I thought it was like a serious psycho-thriller thing.

Teletext has closed down. All editorial content finished on December 14. another victim of the recession.

Yes Dexter is black as pitch comedy. It's got a very good dramatic edge as well - especially season 2 (don't know how 3 and 4 compare but apparently season 4 just won a shitload of awards).

DEXTER is a work of genius, IMHO. It works on all kinds of levels.

Sheesh . . . Mind you, ITV has no money. Maybe Virgin One will pick it up. They recently showed the US version of Stephen Gallagher's 11TH HOUR.

It went totally off the rails in Season 3. New writers meant that the balancing act was failed and Dexter became a smug sneering psychopath. Rather than a tortured, sympathetic psychopath.

Sorry, I really must check these things. Everything I write has the grammar of a spam mail.

Personally I thought season 3 was brilliant. Dexter remained very sympathetic, and Jimmy Smits' charcater was a revelation.

Really? I felt that once the character stopped loathing himself, it became incumbent on the audience to do so. He abandoned the code and just started killing people he personally didn't like. It's never been a believable show, but when you don't have well-written characters to distract you from how silly the whole thing is, it really shows.

I thought season 3 was wonderfully written, and I never stopped believing in the character - or empathising with him.

I thought the season mapped out a valid development of the character, particularly after the integrity of the code was put in doubt after the revelations regarding Harry and Dexter's mother. The conflict generated by his association with Smits' character was superb, and reflected the two sides of Dexter, adding more flesh to his bones.

Season 3 was the best so far, IMHO. I thought the Smits' character was superb. I can't wait for season 4. I've been watching Dexter on FX on Sky. To anyone who hasn't seen it, I recommend getting the boxsets. Definitely worth it. Dexter is one of the best fictional characters ever created.

"I thought the season mapped out a valid development of the character..."

Possibly, but that was where I peeled away from the character. The first two series achievee the remarkable feat of getting us to empathise with a tortured murderer. I couldn't empathise with a cheerful one, though. That razor thin sliver of moral daylight between Dexter and his victims just winked out.

Have you considered that was what the writers had in mind? To challenge us even more to empathise with a killer. Push our boundaries even further. It's a very subversive show, so wouldn't suprise me.

Given the lack of subtlety the new writing team showed in other areas, I doubt this is the case. Even if they didn't intend it though, it's an interesting moral Rorshach, an ethical spectrograph of the light within each of us.

God, I talk wank sometimes.

Good news on the Dexter front (for me at least) - my friend who I went to see the Road with last night gave me DVD copies of seasons 3 AND 4 that he's downloaded.

I wonder what I'm going to be watching over the next few nights.

Finished watching season 3 on Saturday.

I loved it. The revelations from series 2 about Harry really did have the most unexpected repurcussions, with Dexter breaking the Code of Harry in such a dangerous fashion. Jimmy Smits was fantastic as Prado. I can't wait for the weekend when I can start on series 4. there were some interesting hints for potential plotlines that appeared in the last few episodes. If they build those as well as they did Dexter's belated teenage rebellion against Harry, it's going to be a cracker.

Just finished watching season 4 on Friday night. I was devastated. I never thought an episode of Dexter would have me wiping tears from my eye.

It's the best season so far. I'm so glad I had it on disc, if I'd had to wait a week between some of those episodes, I'd have gone mad. Mad I tell you.

'Anyway - I saw some very stinky reviews of series 3 but some very good ones of 4. Looks like it pulled itself out of what sounded like a Mork and Mindy trap.'

How did you get series 4 on disc, Weber?
I've not seen three yet - I'm sort of scared too, after various negative things said.

Skip it, Tony. It's made me dislike the character, possibly forever.

I loved it. In season 2, the perfection of Harry was questioned and Dexter rebels against the code to a certain degree. It made for a very nice progression of the character. Zed agrees with me on this one. See his comments above.

Season 4 has him back on track with the code, but family life is dragging him down.

I'm doing the same! It's like we've been fooled by him ourselves, let him in, convinced ourselves that he's good. We're all Ritas!

This is a character whose hobby is tracking people down, strapping them to a table, torturing them, then cutting them into bits, wrapping the bits in bin bags and dropping them in the sea.

He's never been a good guy.

Yeah, I'm tempted by the 4th year story, but I'll have to treat it as a reboot. They need a Bobby in the shower scene to make S3 a bad dream.
