What should my next book be. It's not going to take long to get through the Lionel Fenn.

Should I choose

Blinding Light - Paul Theroux
Portnoy's Complaint - Philip Roth
Lisey's Story - Steven King
Tide of souls - some bloke who hangs round in waterstones

I have the one by the bloke who hangs around in Waterstones though haven't had a chance to read it yet....

Lisey's Story is great King if you are a fan of his style.

Portnoy's Complaint is excellent and hilarious, and there's no excuse for not reading it immediately...

I'd go for Lisey's Story, although I am part way through Tide of Souls and enjoying it.

Portnoy's Complaint has been much maligned by readers who think it's not a novel, and that the protagonist's psychotic tendencies (which lift it beyond the realms of satire into something quite disturbing) are expressions of the author's personal views. A striking passage in Roth's recent novel Exit Ghost explores this growing tendency among critics to assume that the main thing on an author's mind is 'representation'. Which means, for example, that Macbeth has to be assessed in terms of how fairly it 'represents' the Scottish community...

So do read Portnoy's Complaint. Once you've finished Tide of Souls.

Good review, Natt, it'll be interesting to hear your thoughts on the rest of the book!

Thanks, Mark. I'll hopefully be reviewing the rest of the book some time in February.

[OT] I'm also going to do a slightly reworked version of the review I put in the books thread of The Birthing House, with some added thoughts on genre fiction, but I'll let you know when I've popped that up. [/OT]
