Thanks, Gary. I watched some of that last night. Although I'm interested in Paganini as a phenomenon, I've never really liked his music.

Last week's documentary about Ottorino Respighi was a wonderfullly old-fashioned TV documentary and made me take a re-listen at this composer.

Am off to a concert tonight: Grieg's Holberg and then his piano concerto, followed by Dvorak's ninth. Local church gig. Should be great acoustics.

I love Ggieg's Holberg, but very little else of Grieg.
Dvorak's Ninth? Hmmm. I love his Stabat Mater, particularly with a piano accompaniment instead of orchestra.

Hope you enjoy the concert, Gary. Report back if you can. :-)

The pianist was excellent, Des, but the orchestra was a tad ropey. At least one violin completely out of tune and the first flautist kept getting her notes wrong. The Holberg was their limit; the Dvorak too ambitious.

Still, an enjoyable evening.

Hi, Gary, I often find that 'bad' live performances (as perceived) often lend a new light to a tired old pieces.

Glad you had an ejoyable evening.

I spent yesterday evening at a charity do for MND (from which my Father died in 2007) - and it was an excellent group playing Seventies music (a decade after my heyday!) - full of Madness etc. And I danced...

The thought of D F Lewis dancing to HOUSE OF FUN is just too surreal for my puny brain to assimilate. I'm mopping up pieces of brain from my keyboard.

Indeed, I did. Gary. That very song was played. How did you know?

BTW, seriously, in some circles of my business life I was known as Disco Des.

That delightfully old-fashioned documentary tonight on BBC4 TV about Schubert reminded me what sublime music he wrote. At once uplifting and sad.
