I'm the lucky owner of two vouchers entitling me to see a film for free at an Odeon cinema. The problem is, I've no idea what film(s) to go and see. I'm not really one for new "blockbuster" type films. The last film I saw (and enjoyed) immediately on release at the Odeon was Donnie Darko! I tend to stick to watching old films and more obscure stuff at the National Media Museum.

So, my question is, what would you intelligent and informed folks here recommend I go and see?

I'd prefer something horror, dark or weird fantasy. I'm not keen on sentimental stuff, and I can't stand action adventures.

I need to use these vouchers before the end of June, so is there anything you know of coming out between now and then which I might enjoy?

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

There's Solomon Kane which is getting good writeups from peeps here. There's the new Jean paul Jeunet - Mic Macs? - which looks good from the trailer.

Or there's Legion - which looks like a remake of the old Chris Walken flick Prophecy but looks good from the trailer.

Shutter Island - looks good.

Lovely bones - Got a good write-up from the landlord and I know the book did nearly make me cry.

There's some choices for you.

Oooo, thanks Weber - I'll take a look at some write-ups of those and see if they appeal to me. I'm quite difficult to please when it comes to film, I'm afraid.

Please, folks, throw some more suggestions at me - the more the merrier as it'll give me more ideas to think about.

'Shutter Island' is the one I'm waiting for... can't beat a bit of Scorsese.

I'd wait for Kane on dvd. It's not hugely cinematic. See something that, I dunno, feels more 'cinema-y'. I'd definitely say Shutter Island.

Or...

'Alice In Wonderland' (Tim Burton is always worth watching) or

'Invictus' (ditto Clint Eastwood) or

'Solomon Kane' (admirably dark and thoroughly entertaining fantasy) or

'The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo' (dark and twisted murder mystery based on a bestselling Swedish novel) looks good.

To tell the truth it's been a very poor year for cinema so far with hardly anything I've been dying to see or been massively impressed by...

Anyone heard reviews of the new Neil Jordan movie 'Ondine'? I hear it's some kind of fairy-tale fantasy set in Ireland.

Shutter Island was good - bleak and depressing, but very effective.

My views on some of the quoted movies:
- Legion is truly a B movie. Reasonably entertaining but dumb and really not something you need to see on the big screen
- Shutter Island was peculiar. I compare it to rying to make mayonaise with top ingredients (talented director, good acting, great music, ok story) and yet for some reason the sauce doesn't come together! The first 45 minutes I thought it was awesome but it started crumbling apart afterwards. Especially Di Caprio's nightmares looked like a bad David Lynch, they irritated me even if they were visually well done. Anyway, from a "technical" point of view the movie is quite impressive. Meanwhile I have the soundtrack - actually it's for the most part consisting of modern classical music, and very impressive music at that. The intro composition "Fog Tropes" is unforgettable.
- Solomon Kane gets good reviews from those who've seen it on festivals. It seems fun and it looks good. You can find a trailer online. I haven't seen it yet.

Here is something special, a movie that isn't out yet but featuring a cool trailer: "Valhalla Rising". A review:

Now looking at the Odeon site and this is my feedback:
- Of course, if you haven't seen Inglorious Basterds yet, you really should!
- The White Ribbon by Haneke should be plenty eerie, in fact it should be right up your alley. I am pretty curious about it myself !
- They do play Goodfellas! One of the best gangster movies ever. I think that Scorcese was in higher form then than when making Shutter island.

Here you can read what Roger Ebert thinks about The White Ribbon. You'll want to see it:

Tom, I raved at length about 'The White Ribbon' on the 'Film Of The Year' thread.

It was that for me as well as getting my vote for film of the last decade and is far and away Haneke's masterpiece to date. It is indeed very eerie and I would say borderline horror utilising many of the conventions of the genre. I can't wait to see it again...!

Stephen - see my "nice things in Bradford" thread - I've already been to see that. Mind you, I am wondering whether to go again, I enjoyed it so much ...
