I've just finished reading the ARC of a huge 800 page novel called 'The Passage' by Justin Cronin. It's not out till June but I wanted to mention it on here because it's such a good book.

It's a post-apocalyptic story, set in the aftermath of a vampire virus that has ravaged the globe. I won't go into the plot, other than to say it's fairly unremarkable. What is remarkable, however, is the writing. It's what the word 'epic' was invented for. Very reminiscent of The Stand, I would heartily recommend this. Here's the info -
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/0752897845/ref=s9_simh_gw_p14_t1?pf_rd_m=A3P5 ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_s=center-1&pf_rd_r=0G7D6CZ8EQ8XRFYH7F80&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=467 198433&pf_rd_i=468294

There's an incredible amount of hype surrounding it. Hollywood has paid a vast amount of money for the option. That brought me to the book with a great degree of cynicism, but I have to say I was very impressed with the first part in what will eventually become a trilogy.

I'm sick of post-apocalyptic fiction. Can we please have a PRE-apocalyptic tale for once?!

Where do you people get these ARCs from? I've never had one in my life...

>>I won't go into the plot, other than to say it's fairly unremarkable.<<

Which is clearly why Hollywood are so interested.

Craig - I plan to write a post post apocalyptic novel. It's about a postman. And a wooden post.

Kevin Costner's already made the movie of that book, Zed.

Yeah, I've heard a lot of stuff about this much-hyped book but no one's told me what it's about before.

I've been sent the new Sophie Hannah book in ARC. Haven't started it yet, though.

Gary - I was in the Shocklines Secret Santa thing they did. Matt Schwartz sent me it (he works for Random House).

Mark - I started reading it, not knowing anything about it. What I like about it most is that it attempts to wrestle vampires back from the Twilight/True Blood fold. They're mean bastards in this book. Viscious killing machines.

Craig - the world that Cronin creates is set 100 years or so after the apocalypse. Society has reverted back to an almost innocent existence. The first third of the book depicts the fall of man. After that it becomes almost a traditional fantasy; heroes living in an unrecognisable world.

I know that tons of people will not like this novel (mainly to balance out the hype it's had). But I thought it was excellent.

I also just got an ARC of The Passage. There was a full page ad for this book on the inside front cover of last week's Bookseller magazine. I was quite intrigued. I believe Ridley Scott's set to direct the film.

Steve - does sound epic - odd though the hype, since it doesn't, honestly, sound like nothing ever seen before - unless they just assume it will be a runaway bestseller...

Zed/Mark - OMG!!! How many years later is it?! And I just now get it - THE POSTMAN - the "post-man"!
