Lord P and I saw The Cabinet of Dr Caligari last night as it was meant to be seen. That is, in a theatre with a live score. Neither of us had ever seen a silent film with live music before and I can't imagine a better initiation than this one.

Caligari

The music is by Minima, who lent just the right air of eerie beauty and dreamy weirdness to the film. Fantastic! Highly recommended if they're coming to your area:

And this site has a great interview with Alex Hogg, one of the band members. Near the end is another YouTube clip not on the Minima site. It features my favourite bit of music from the performance - the cello is just so eerie and heartbreaking. Gives me chills!

Zed - take a look at the National Media Museum website - Bradford International Film Festival. I'm sure they're doing it there next week - quite soon anyway.

I've seen it done that way a few times. Also Metropolis and Nosferatu with live music. Absolutely superb!

Ah, sorry Zed - it's on Friday and you'll be elsewhere that day, I know:

But it is worth keeping an eye on the NMM website as they do show these films with live music quite regularly. The Fantastic Films Weekend will be coming up in May and they tend to show a couple of them then.

I went to a screeninong of this film a few years ago with Nash the Slash (Canadian memebers of this board will likely know who that is) performing an original score on electric violin and mandolin. It was astonishing.

I know Nash! I used to love his stuff! Children of the Night etc. Oh, he was great. Dead Man's Curve... Classic stuff.

Cool, Tony. He was the perfect musician for that screening. It was great seeing him in full Invisible Man bandages and so forth, dramatically playing eerie music while the movie ran behind him.

It shocked me to find he used to be in a soft/prog rock band, FM.

Only ever saw this once, late one night on TV when I remember being impressed by the production design and whole atmosphere of the film and surprised at how well the story still stood up - right down to the contemporary feel of the surprise ending.

The experience was almost equally frustrating, though, as I could imagine how much better it would have looked glowing up on the big screen. Had the same experience the one time I watched Dreyer's 'Vampyr' on TV. Great old films like these cry out to be projected large...
