Noose and Gibbet (eta DEC 2010)

Noose and Gibbet's second book for 2010 sees for the first time the stories of Oscar Cook and Christine Campbell Thomson in a complete collection. With a re-discovered story from each - 'On the Highway' by Oscar Cook and 'The Brood of the Beast' by CCT - both have NEVER seen publication in book form. A biography by Richard Dalby and Johnny Mains will document their story as husband and wife and the creation of the infamous NOT AT NIGHT series, which Christine edited, and both wrote for and beyond.

Glad it wasn't two fingers!

Seriously, this sounds good. I admit I'm not familiar with either of them, but I do remember the Not At Night series (though I've no idea if I actually read any of them).

Johnny, you're a one-man publishing/editing dynamo at the moment.

I have paperback copies of two of the Not At Night books - read them as a lad (yes, they did have books then. Just no cars...) and loved them at the time, so I'm already salivating at the thought of this.
Damn you, Johnny Mains - raider of my bank account!

Caroline - cheers! Made a few quid from Back from the Dead - so may as well put it into some good projects!

Fantastic!! If only it were possible to reissue the entire 'Not At Night' series - I know them only as the near legendary inspiration for Van Thal's 'Pan Horror' books. The forgotten classics of weird fiction from the 20s & 30s that must lie therein... (sigh)

It's been thought of and discussed with a few others and the upshot of it is that a project like that would be a logistical nightmare as the copyrights are all over the place. Would take years to sort out. Same as the Pan Horrors.}

Good job I held onto my Pan & Fontana collections then! Actually, nothing would make me part with them...
But to own an entire set of the 'Not At Night' series - that has to be the Holy Grail of horror fiction as far as I'm concerned.

I have most of them, in really beat-up copies purchased mostly from a second-hand bookshop in 1979. There are two or three I don't have. The content is uneven, and I wonder what readers made of the odd Lovecraft, Howard or Smith story tucked among the anecdotes of colonial torture and experimental surgery. The books are of huge interest for enthusiasts of Weird Tales magazine, which furnished most of their contents.

You jammy sod!!

The tasters I got in the stories that Van Thal included in those early Pan Horrors have always had me craving to read the 'Not At Night' books... time for an internet search and a small bank loan methinks!

Got five of them - three with intact dust-jackets - but that was a LOT of saving....
