I have Joanna Newsom's latest 3-lp box set (Have One On Me) and it is absolutely gorgeous, even if the songs are a little diffuse and rambling. Her voice is an exact replica of Kate Bush at the time of her wonderful early demos. For a gentleman of a certain vintage that should be recommendation enough! However, to hear a squeaky little girl voice coming out of a grown woman is rather painful to watch. And when she talks she is revealed as a caricature of the worst kind of west-coast airhead. She's very easy on the eye, but I personally find her embarassing to watch. | ||

Oh dear! I was converted to her music after having heard "This Side of the Blue" in a cinema ad and finding she cites Nabokov as a primary influence. | ||

I like her - I saw her last year. She's not like you and I but that's a good sign, I think. I have a bottle she had left on the stage with a bit of water in it. She'd had a cold, and when I tried to catch it by drinking the last drop from it I got all this lippy she'd worn on my mouth. Ace! | ||

Ace!<< Tony!! And I thought I was strange in my desire to get up close and personal with the famous!  I'd never heard of her either until this thread. I missed Jools Holland, but I'll check her out on YouTube or some such. Sounds interesting. Obviously whether or not she's "pleasing on the eye" isn't a factor in my case, but I like interesting and unusual music. | ||
