And Donnie Darko. Just ask Craig, he loves it. Mind you he's American, so be gentle. You're not American are you? If so, Weber made forced me to write these things. If you're not an American, then I lay claim to such monumental, groundbreaking hilarity. |

Adam Wolf is an alias... Though I occasionally introduce myself to strangers as him. I adore Ramsey Campbell and thought The Mist was one of the best King adaptations I'd ever seen. Donnie Darko is a film I loved in my boyhood - I'd puncture a hole in the space-time continuum to go back and talk to him...and what gives any of you the impression I'm innocent? (",) |

Craig, you're a 'Seinfeld' fan as well!! The greatest sitcom of the last 20 years with 'Curb' a very, very, very close second. What are your thoughts on the upcoming Larry David/Woody Allen collaboration - 'Whatever Works'? On paper it should be a match made in heaven, but... |

Stevie - what do you mean "upcoming"?! - WHATEVER WORKS has been available on dvd for months!!! And me? I loved it. I thought it another Allen masterpiece, though oh so many of course, imho, missed the point, and got hung up on David's character, etc. Allen is always working beneath the surface of his comedy, exploring deeper themes.... I loved "Seinfeld," but loved "Curb" even more - though I only got through the entire first 3 seasons. So much to catch up with, so very very much.... |

Craig, 'Whatever Works' is due for release here in a few weeks and I, for one, can't wait. Also going to see four Woody films in a row on the big screen this week: 'Sleeper', 'Manhattan', 'Zelig' & 'The Purple Rose Of Cairo'. And I'm only catching up on Season 6 of 'Curb' myself at the minute after just getting it on DVD... you really don't know the sheer tear-inducing comedy genius you've missed. They're currently making Season 8 which means at least 81 episodes in existence to enjoy - bliss!! Right, I'm off to watch the next one followed by ep 3 of 'Psychoville' and the 'The Silent Scream' ep of HHOH... |

I have the same affection and admiration for Allen as you and Craig have, Steve, and I mean, his current offerings...even when he's slated, his work far surpasses most other director's best efforts. I even find some of his later work better than some, just some, of his earlier work. I don't like Manhattan Murder Mystery because of its ending, and I adore well thought out Hitchcock pastiches/homages, but I think his one film with Sean Penn a masterpiece. It also contains the funniest fainting scenes ever in a movie. Also, for me, Allen managed to nail the English (in this case the upper-upper class), in Matchpoint, as Cronenberg nailed the working class in Spider. For 'outsiders' it was uncannily accurate. Well, in my humble opinion. |

Frank, do please rewatch MANHATTAN MURDER MYSTERY! I too disliked it for some odd reason, the first time I saw it... then I saw it again, and realized, it's sheer brilliance. (mild non-spoiling spoilers) Again, Allen is working beneath the surface here, and the underlying storyline is: Diane Keaton's anxiety about her marriage. The "inciting incident" is the sudden nagging fear, that her and Allen's marriage is going to either dissolve, or suffer, or fail... and it's this anxiety, that "manifests," as the developing murder mystery. Note that every time she has a particularly emotional moment - there's a sudden development in the mystery - so is she propelling/projecting a fantasy, of her own or in general; or is she really seeing something that's happening?... She and Allen do grow distant, because of her mental state - though Allen plays a good husband character for once, and is well established as being not a philanderer - that Diane has nothing to fear, objectively, from Allen (the scenes between Allen and Huston as evidence); but between her and Alda?... She's the source of her own downfall, if she doesn't get a hold of herself in time. When they finally do "come back together" as a couple - they are able to, together, be pro-active, rather than reactive/evidence gathering, when it comes to the greater mystery.... There's even more going on, but it's a very intelligent, and funny film, this one - one of the better mysteries of recent years. |

Great analysis of 'Manhattan Murder Mystery', Craig. Not only that, it's also one of his most unashamedly funny films - working as pure knockabout comedy as well as psychological allegory of marital boredom in need of spicing up. |

Caroline: Two guys in suits - one on bass cello, the other slapping the skins - a buxom blonde standing still as a statue and snapping her fingers - you rarely see that combination in pop music anymore.... Woody Allen is a genius, a pure genius. What else needs saying? |

Too much information, Zed. Though I think a wider definition of 'frustrated' encompasses all of us. The ability to be satisfied with our discredited social order and commercially dominated culture is not one that I envy. |
