I had an idea the other day for a new type of anthology. Basically, the editor selects a story title and commissions however many writers from all genres to write a story with that title.

I think it would be really interesting to see how different the stories would be.

But back to the title of this thread, has it been done before?

I don't believe so, Marc. One in which all the authors were given the same plot has.

There are at least two, Weber! The Elastic Press anthology The Alsiso Project, edited by Andy Hook, is exactly what you describe. So is the Leviathan Press anthology The Piano Player Has No Fingers, edited by Jeff Vandermeer.

Interesting concept. I remember a pair of anthologies in which the authors were asked to write stories based on a certain piece of artwork (one of them was titled Imagination Fully Dilated).

There's a Poe antho in which different authors finish off a scrap of prose left behind by Poe.

Des's forthcoming antho Nem 10 has loads of stories starring a character with the same name.

And aren't Des' Cone Zero and Cern Zoo the same kind of idea? There were a lot of stories entitled Cone Zero in Cone Zero! Although, of course, it wasn't exactly as you describe, Weber, but the idea was that authors wrote stories inspired by the book title.

Sorry, Weber, I hope we haven't dampened your enthusiasm. It's a great idea anyway!

Writing stories for pre-existing titles or pre-existing artwork was standard practice for the old pulp magazines of the 1930s and '40s. I know that those mags weren't really 'anthologies' but the conceit is the same -- expect that back then it was just a matter of pragmatism.

Yep, Caroline is right. Thanks, Caroline.

Today I saw a tiny TV screen showing a pop music channel on an actual beer pump in a pub as I waited to buy beer. I was just imagining in some pubs, skinheads watching Springwatch.

I'm a skinhead. Mind you, I don't have much choice.
