Don't know why it is, but I just can't get excited about sequels or prequels. Possibly this is the fault of THE DESCENT II, or whatever it was called, which I watched against my better judgement last week, and found to be an unashamed, scene-by-scene remake of the original. I know that not all sequels are quite that bad, but but all I can think of while watching these re-treads is wouldn't it be great if all this money and talent had been lavished on something entirely new? I note that the blogger you refer to was also getting excited about the forthcoming release of SCREAM 4. All I can say about that is good grief! |

...and we're going to know how the prequel ends too, aren't we? |

Sequels, prequels... they're as old as movies themselves, alas... they're never going away.... Even Shakespeare was into sequels (Merry Wives, Henry V) and prequels (Richard II & III)... |

I actually hate the idea of prequels. It's just going back. I hate things 'looked back on'. |

The first part of the Godfather Part II is a prequel section, definitely looking back on. |

Though in the case of the Star Wars films, exempting the last of the new trilogy, I would agree that prequels rather spoil things. |

I think a sequel can definitely work if it continues the story. THE TWO TOWERS and THE RETURN OF THE KING, though they were all originally part of the same book, were obvious examples of what a good sequel can do ... progress the narrative, maybe taking it in a completely new direction. But when it's just a same thing over and over, as you often get with slasher sequels, I become despondent. |

I refuse to watch the Thing Prequel, seeing as it's clear I should have been involved in writing and directing it and my absence from the project will be to its detriment. S |

You could contact them and ask for a small role in the film. I have. I asked to be a huskie. Or barring that a staglitite. |

Hmmm... decent sequels/prequels? 'The Godfather Part II' has to be the ultimate example, of both. I've always thought of the 1970s 'Invasion Of The Body Snatchers' as more of a great sequel than a remake. Hammer & Universal always delivered in their Frankenstein, Dracula & Mummy sequels imo... even the lesser ones are fabulously cheesy entertainment. 'Aliens' was an inspired sequel as was 'Terminator II'. 'Mad Max II : The Road Warrior' kicked ass! The two 'Star Wars' sequels are brilliant with 'The Empire Strikes Back' even topping the original. The prequels now look like an increasingly bad idea, poorly executed. George A. Romero produced two unbetterable sequels to his epoch making 'Night Of The Living Dead', with, again, the second topping the original. 'Magnum Force' & 'The Enforcer' were more than worthy follow-ups to 'Dirty Harry' imo. 'For A Few Dollars More' somehow managed to improve upon 'A Fistful Of Dollars' but 'The Good, The Bad And The Ugly' is really a stand-alone movie. 'French Connection II' is, for me, every bit as powerful as the original, and criminally underrated. 'Superman II' & 'Spiderman II' & 'Batman Returns' & 'The Dark Knight' all bettered classic originals. That's off the top of my head but bound to be loads more... what about James Bond, for instance? |

Most of the ones you name, Steve, are the way sequels should be done IMO - as a natural continuation of the story, or the next chapter in an overall much larger story, without any repetition of the original. Sadly, however, I find this is increasingly the exception rather than the rule, particularly within horror. When quite average movies have sequels made of them - usually because Hollywood execs absolutely crap themselves about commiting capital to any project for which there isn't already an established market - I feel even more hostile to the accountancy class than usual. My main bugbears are the schools of FRIDAY 13TH 1-10, HALLOWEEN 1-10 etc. That Hollywood has now actually begun to remake these sequels - in chronoligical order, as if it mattered - would be totally hilarious if it wasn't for the fact that no irony or post-modernism is intended at all. On the subject of remakes, SPIDERMEN (yes, that would be the one that was made by Sam Raimi so recently), has already been green-lit for a remake !!!!! |

I quite liked 'Halloween II' & thought 'Friday The 13th Part II' was great but, yeah, every one of the rest of them is pure bollocks, as were all the 'Nightmare On Elm Street' & 'Scream' sequels. |

Actually I think Final destination 2 has to score highly for a sequel - as do Childs play 3 and Bride of Chucky. IMO Bride of Chucky - despite being number 4 in the series - is the best, followed by 3, followed by 1, followed by 2 followed by Seed of. I think the Spiderman remake is mainly because Toby Maguire dropped out after number 3 and they've decided to reboot rather than just change the actor. |

I have a sneaky fondness for the 'Child's Play' movies too, Weber. Didn't like any of the 'Final Destination' films. A great idea poorly done imo... 'The Omen' trilogy did the same schtick so much more effectively - another two great sequels there, particularly 'Damien : Omen II'. Also the first 'Saw' was very good but the sequels suck imo. |

Another guilty pleasure are the 'Leprechaun' movies. That wee guy was great! |
