This is one of those films I will make a point of not going to see, no matter how good the reviews are, because I have yet to read the source novel. Ramsey recommended it and after reading 'The Getaway' I'm a committed Jim Thompson fan now. This is me making a conscious decision to rank Literature above Cinema as an artform. |

Hooray!! Coming out of seeing 'Whatever Works' last night (my new Film of the Year) I decided to buy my ticket for Godard's 'Breathless' tonight and thought I was hallucinating when, lo and behold, what were they selling behind the counter at the box office but a new edition of Jim Thompson's 'The Killer Inside Me'!!!! So I snapped up both without even thinking. Thankfully the book has a beautiful retro style cover and not one of those awful film tie-in affairs, a pet hate of mine. So 'Breathless' at 9.00 tonight (can't wait) and 'The Killer Inside Me' as soon as I finish 'The Unlimited Dream Company'. I love it when a plan comes together... |

Breathless is fantastic, Steve. You'll bloody love it. Dare I say it, but have you seen the remake with Richard Gere????? |

Haven't seen the remake as I was always holding out to see the original first but I've heard from friends, whose opinion I trust, that it stinks to high heaven. There's a thought, I must make a list of the "Great Cinema Classics" that I've yet to see. Polanski's 'Macbeth' again springs to mind, which I've just realised I can now order online! I would consider myself "well viewed" but there are still so many others yet to see... |

À bout de souffle is indeed excellent. And you know what, Jim Mcbride's remake isn't bad either. Polanski's Macbeth is my favourite cinema adaptation of Shakespeare, with Throne of Blood running a very close seciond. |

No, you wrote seciond, you can't take it back. It's there for time immemorial. But I agree about the Breathless remake...it's not half bad. BTW: I have Dead Set, is is it any good? I know Charlie Brooker wrote it, but I have no idea if my friend's insistence is based on loyalty to his favourite journo/critic, whatever his credentials, or whether it really is THAT good. |

I can't stand Charlie Brooker (he's made a career out of stating the obvious) but loved Dead Set. |

Just back from 'Breathless' and, yes, it's a beautiful piece of cinema - gorgeous to look at, charismatically played, witty, thrilling, sexy, poignant and profound with every scene and composition done to perfection - Paris has never looked more enchanting. A heartfelt ode to (and deconstruction of) American film noir and doomed romance that was a complete joy to experience. What a total bitch but, by heck, if ever a girl was "to die for" it was she... sigh. After this and last night's movie I feel all cinematically rejuvenated! |
